Thuringian bathing waters shine: top quality and no reason to worry!

The bathing days in the Free State of Thuringia can come! The European Environment Agency (EEA) published the current report on the water quality of German bathing waters on June 20, 2025, and the news is entirely positive. According to n-tv, Thuringia's bathing waters have a top quality that could make many other regions jealous. In this regard, Thuringian bathers can breathe a sigh of relief, because harmful bacteria are not a big issue here.

A total of 27 natural bathing waters with 37 bathing areas in Thuringia were examined. The outdoor pools also shine: 159 outdoor pools are available, six of which have biological water treatment. The water quality of these bodies of water is checked every four weeks by the district health authorities.

Leader in Thuringia

The swimming spots that particularly stand out include:

  • Kiessee in Immelborn
  • Bergsee Ratscher in Südthüringen
  • Naturschwimmbad Heldrungen in Nordthüringen
  • Stausee Hohenfelden
  • Baggersee Kühnhausen bei Erfurt
  • Badestellen an den Saaletalsperren in Ostthüringen
  • Talsperre Zeulenroda

These waters have not only proven to be “suitable for swimming”, but also boast “excellent” test results. Especially in Altenburger Land there are tasty options for a relaxing day of swimming with the Prößdorfer See, the Hainbergsee and the Lake Pahna. The Zeulenroda dam, which has several bank areas, also shows its best side.

Quality at the top

With 90.5% of all 2,300 bathing waters examined in Germany showing outstanding quality, the trend is clear: water quality has improved slightly compared to the previous year. This was also confirmed by the Umweltbundesamt, which emphasizes that 98% of bathing waters meet at least the requirements of the EU Bathing Water Directive.

In the 2024 bathing season, over 13,000 water samples were evaluated, and almost 91% of German bathing waters received the grade “excellent”. Nevertheless, some bodies of water were rated “poor” and were temporarily closed, often due to unforeseeable environmental situations such as heavy rain or an accumulation of blue-green algae.

In summary, it can be said that the joy of swimming in Thuringia can be enjoyed to the fullest without sacrificing hygiene and safety!
