Thuringian couple opens campsite in the old swimming pool – book now!

A very special project is taking shape in Thuringia: Claudia and her husband have fulfilled their dream of having their own campsite. After many trips as passionate campers, they discovered an old swimming pool in Ilmenau in 2018 that was for sale. The two, who had already gained some experience in the camping sector, jumped at the chance and bought the site. How thuringia24 reported, planning for the project began a year later. Due to lengthy administrative procedures, everything didn't really get rolling, which is why the renovation work couldn't start until 2024.

Despite the difficulties, the two were optimistic. Their campsite “Naturcamp Lenkgrund” opened just a year later and was very popular. At the grand opening, all 20 parking spaces were occupied, so some guests even had to be turned away. An exciting moment that reflects the great media interest that accompanied the project from the groundbreaking to the preliminary opening. Pleasing: The conversion of the former swimming pool, which now serves as a parking space, was completed in time for the start.

An event to get to know each other

On June 28th it will be completely official: an open day is planned, which will take place from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Visitors can look forward to an interesting supporting program and entry is even free. Everything should be ready by then and the final construction sites will be completed so that guests can get a comprehensive impression of the new camping offer in the Rennsteig nature reserve. The Lenkgrund nature camp offers accommodation options for tents, motorhomes, caravans and even tiny houses, which makes the combination of nature enjoyment and modern amenities particularly attractive.

Camping is trendy

The enthusiasm for camping is growing, and Thuringia is no exception. In 2023, the local camping and mobile home parks recorded a whopping 800,000 overnight stays, with every 12th overnight stay taking place in this form, according to thueringen.tourismusnetzwerk.info. This not only shows the popularity of camping, but also the potential for new projects such as nature camp. What is particularly surprising is the 18.2 percent increase in overnight stays compared to 2019, a pre-Corona year.

Digitalization in the camping sector is also progressing, which means an expansion of options for campers and operators. The development towards online booking and other digital offerings improves the service. But challenges also remain, such as the fragmentation of information and the technical infrastructure. Nevertheless, it can be assumed that the industry will continue to prosper in the future.

With the Lenkgrund nature camp, Claudia and her husband are relying on this trend and creating a place where nature lovers and camping enthusiasts can feel at home. Her path is a beautiful example of how, with perseverance and optimism, big dreams can come true - in the middle of Thuringian nature.
