Discover Hoyerswerda's magic: audio walk and exciting exhibitions!

The region has a lot to offer, and if you want to do something exciting at the weekend, this is the right place for you. A great option is the audio walk in Hoyerswerda, which was created under the title “The landscape speaks here”. This interesting tour in the former opencast mining area starts with an opening on June 21, 2025 and offers stories of Sorbian spirits, sheep and plants over a length of 42 kilometers. Ten listening stations with QR codes ensure that visitors can immerse themselves in the stories even more intensively. The audios are also available for download at Research practice.

But that's not all: the exhibition “beSondershausen” will be on display at the Castle Museum in Sondershausen from June 2nd, 2025 to January 18th, 2026. On the occasion of the 900th birthday of the city of Sondershausen, this exciting show tells stories of artists, historical figures as well as children and young people. The doors are open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. - last entry is at 4:30 p.m. and entry is free.

Celebrations for the city's anniversary

Sondershausen itself is celebrating a major city anniversary until June 9, 2025 and is presenting a diverse program of events. The start was on June 2nd in the castle museum with the aforementioned anniversary exhibition. A highlight for music lovers will be the festival weekend, where Adel Tawil and Alex Christensen will perform. In addition, numerous activities will be offered from June 3rd to 9th, including a festive service in the Trinity Church, an anniversary run for all age groups and a seniors' breakfast with a program and lecture on the market square.

The theme miles that are used during the celebrations are also particularly exciting. Here, the city's history takes center stage on the market square, while the blue light mile on the Schwanparkplatz is worth seeing. The most popular locations for visitors are the dealer mile on the main street, the residence mile in the castle courtyard and a children's, youth, club and sports mile on the theater meadow. An open-air cinema invites you to relax on June 8th, and on the same day a parade from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. will bring the city's history to life with over 80 illustrations.

Cultural enrichment

As part of the celebrations, a literature project will also be presented that presents the result of “Sondershausen writes”. This initiative ensures that the history of the city is recorded in written form. A commemorative publication with a city chronicle and program will also be printed, and the exclusive commemorative medal and a limited anniversary stamp are particularly worthwhile souvenirs for collectors.

For anyone looking for a captivating read, we recommend the book “Floating Lasts” by Annett Gröschner. This work illuminates the experiences of flower arranger and crane driver Hanna Krause during turbulent times in the 20th century and is linked to the exhibition "Indescribably feminine. Images of women in the GDR" in the Brandenburg State Museum for Modern Art, which runs until August 10, 2025.

So if you want to make your weekend active and culturally varied, you have a colorful selection in this region. Information about the events can also be found on the respective websites of the cities and organizers: Sondershausen Sondershausen.de and the audio walk via MDR.
