Serious accident on the A4: dangerous goods truck breaks through the guardrail!

A serious accident on the A4 in Weimarer Land is causing massive traffic disruptions today. A tanker truck traveling towards Dresden broke through the central barrier at around 1:35 p.m. This incident led to the motorway being completely closed in both directions between the Nohra and Erfurt-Vieselbach junctions. According to Antenn Thüringen, it is currently unclear how long the closure will last.

Initial police reports indicate that no other vehicle was involved in the accident. The truck driver was seriously injured and had to be taken to hospital in a rescue helicopter. Three first responders and a firefighter suffered respiratory irritation, while the fire department on site set up a perimeter of several hundred meters to defuse the dangerous situation.

Dangerous goods under control

Of particular concern is the load of the truck, which was carrying six large containers of alkyl sulfonic acid. Of these, three containers are defective and leaking, increasing the risk of environmental damage. Alkylsulfonic acids are often used in detergents and cleaning agents and as catalysts, and their uncertainty is reinforced by the fact that around 29% of dangerous goods transported are classified as “toxic,” according to BASt.

The fire brigade's deployment includes, among other things, special forces who are trained to deal with dangerous goods accidents. A continuous operation is expected until the evening to clarify the situation and restore the road. Traffic is backed up in both directions for several kilometers, and there are also massive disruptions on the alternative routes. Drivers traveling towards Dresden should use the last free Erfurt-Ost exit, while travelers to Frankfurt should avoid the Weimar exit, as MDR reports.

Accidents involving dangerous goods often have serious consequences and can double the economic costs of such incidents. It is therefore particularly important that the load securing and labeling of the vehicles is handled well when transporting dangerous goods. In a serious accident like this, not only the health concerns of those involved, but also the environmental risks must be taken into account.
