Storms in Thuringia: Weimarer Land fights against mud floods!
A devastating storm hit the Weimar region hard on June 1, 2025. Within a very short time, the rain turned into torrents that flooded the streets and avalanches of mud and rubble rolled through the town. The fire brigades had to be in constant operation and many streets were temporarily closed because the sewage system could not cope with the large amounts of rainfall. How thueringen24.de reported, the rural community of Am Ettersberg was particularly affected by the damage.
In the Bad Berka district of Tannroda, gravel piled up to half a meter high, and in Kranichfeld a thunderstorm cell also left clear traces. Several streets were under up to 30 centimeters of water, which led to storm drains becoming blocked with debris. There was also an accident involving three vehicles on the rain-soaked road on the A4 near Weimar, with one person being slightly injured and the resulting damage being estimated at around 50,000 euros mdr.de additionally recorded.
Help for affected families
One family in particular from the rural community of Am Ettersberg urgently needs support with reconstruction. Their farm gate could not withstand the massive amounts of water, which resulted in significant damage. Luise, a good friend of the family, has therefore started a call for donations on GoFundMe. She shows pictures of the devastation on her page and appeals to the community to ask for help. After all, those affected were previously always helpful and now their house is in ruins, reports thueringen24.de.
The persistent rainfall and the associated heavy rain events, which usually last less than an hour, bring high amounts of precipitation and promote local flash floods and landslides. These weather phenomena are not only a problem in Thuringia, but can occur anywhere where the geological and meteorological conditions apply. Factors such as topography and the frequency and intensity of heavy rain are particularly crucial tlubn.thueringen.de explained.
Despite the threat of cooler temperatures at the beginning of the week with a maximum of 20 to 24 degrees, which at least provides some relief, the risk of further storms remains. In the medium term, it will become more summery again, and with it concerns about the next heavy rain events. The affected family is hoping for support to rebuild what was damaged by the storm and to better protect themselves against future damage.
