Forest service in Keuerstadt: A sign of hope for our forests!

On Whit Monday, June 10, 2025, the traditional forest service took place in Keuerstadt behind the Nikolauskapelle, which attracted numerous visitors. The event, organized by the ForstBW forest district Virngrund, brought together employees of the forestry company and their families. The weather was fresh after the productive rains of the past few days, but the sun was shown during the service.

Gisela Landgraf, deputy head of the forest district, warmly welcomed the guests and opened the service, which was celebrated ecumenically by Pastor Tobias Dürr and Vicar Andreas Heupel. The speech by Landgrave not only addressed forest aspects, but also the pressing effects of climate change on the domestic forests.

climate change and its challenges

In her speech, Gisela Landgraf expressed concern about the tense conditions in the woods. The challenges include the increasing drought, heat, storms and heavy rain events that heavily strain the forests. The increase in the bark beetle, which is already active in the third or fourth generation, is particularly alarming. More and more tree species show symptoms of suffering; The spruce and larch are often affected by the bark beetle, while the fir suffers from dryness and the ash is affected by the ash death. The Bergaorn also has a hard time with the soot-bark disease.

Susann Biehl, senior forestry of the Evangelical Church in Central Germany, manages 13,000 hectares of forest and plans a long -term conversion over 100 to 150 years. However, it is confronted with unexpected difficulties because the income goes back from the forest and at the same time arises high expenses for new plantings. The cost of afforestation amounts to up to 10,000 euros per hectare in the first five to ten years. Current statistics show that about five percent of the forest areas are permanently bald.

Common commitment to a better future

The collection of the service benefited from the forest orphanage and shows the commitment of the participants for the protection of the forests and their functions. The event was musically framed by the trombone choirs from Rechenberg, Wildenstein and Weipertshofen, which contributed to the festive atmosphere. A central point of discussion about keeping the forest was the need for greater social awareness of the forest as a common good. Tobias Krüger, pastor of the Petrigemeinde in Mühlhausen, is also active in the organization of forest services to raise awareness of nature.

Andreas Marx from the Helmholtz Center for Environmental Research made it clear that it was time to find practical solutions for the problems of the forests. Discussions about the settlement of oak types from the French Atlantic coast were initiated to counter the challenges. However, the suitability of these new tree species will only be shown in the next 10 to 15 years.

The event in Keuerstadt was therefore not only a spiritual gathering, but also an important step to strengthen consciousness about the challenges that our forests are facing today. As Schwäbische Post reports, this forest service marks a synthesis of faith, nature and a clear configuration for a sustainable Dealing with the forests.
