Halle (Saale) remembers the victims: six years after the attack!

On October 9, 2025, people in Halle (Saale) remembered the victims of the terrible terrorist attack that occurred exactly six years ago. At 12:03 p.m., all church bells rang throughout the city and the Halleschen Verkehrs AG (Havag) vehicles stopped for a minute to make a mark of remembrance. This gesture was intended to honor the victims and their families and unite the city together in silent remembrance. The Jewish Community of Halle, together with the city of Halle and the Evangelical Church District of Halle-Saalekreis, invited people to the commemorative events, which represent an important part of social life and illustrate the cohesion of the city community.

At 12 p.m., numerous Halle residents gathered at the synagogue for a silent remembrance. District Administrator Hartmut Handschak also took part in the ceremony and laid flowers to show his respect. Citizens had the opportunity to view the Jewish community monument until 2:30 p.m. The afternoon was enriched with a memorial tour, organized by “Halle gegen Rechts – Alliance for Civil Courage”, which began at 2 p.m. at the Steintor and ended on Ludwig-Wucherer-Straße. From 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. there was another commemoration under the motto “On October 9th and 364 days a year: create spaces for remembrance!” took place.

Police presence and security measures

As the Saxony-Anhalt police reported, the commitment of the police officers during the memorial events was noticeable. Their goal was to ensure the safety of the participants and ensure that everything ran smoothly. The events were quiet and there were no significant incidents, which the police found very satisfactory. Traffic measures were implemented, including the closure of Steintor, Ludwig-Wucherer-Straße and adjacent streets. These measures were carried out as planned and were lifted again after the events were over.

Commemoration and current political situation

The commemorative events in Halle took place in a social context characterized by an increase in anti-Semitism. It was only on October 7, 2025, on the occasion of the second anniversary of Hamas' attack on Israel, that Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz emphasized the need to decisively combat anti-Semitism in Germany. This reminds citizens of the important role of remembrance in showing solidarity with fellow Jews. October 7, 2023 is recorded as a black day in the history of the Jewish people and President Frank-Walter Steinmeier called for a living environment in which Jews can live without fear.

In Halle and beyond, people today, as in the past, are committed to keeping memories alive and fighting for a solidarity-based and respectful society. The commemorative events are not only a sign of remembrance, but also an invitation to everyone to help shape a peaceful future.
