Heat wave closes daycare centers in Frankfurt and Offenbach early!

The temperatures are rising and the effects of the heat are clearly noticeable in Frankfurt and Offenbach. The Diakonie has decided to close its daycare centers at 1 p.m. due to a current heat warning. This decision caused a lack of understanding among many parents because they had to spontaneously pick up their children. The main reason for this measure is the well-being of children and the protection of vulnerable groups who particularly suffer from extreme weather conditions.

Despite this short notice, there are also other daycare providers who have not restricted their opening hours. The reasoning behind these facilities is that children in daycare centers, which are often located on the ground floor, can be better cared for than at home or in the car, where temperatures can rise even higher. It is noteworthy that the decision was made across the board for all facilities, which causes irritation as some daycare centers have a pleasant indoor climate that makes them less susceptible to the heat.

Heat protection and responsibilities

The Diakonie operates around 80 toddler rooms, daycare centers and after-school care centers in Frankfurt and Offenbach and plans to integrate further facilities as more and more Protestant parishes hand over their daycare centers to the Diakonie. These developments raise concerns that individual solutions for each daycare center may no longer be sufficiently taken into account. There is an express desire for more decision-making power on the part of the parishes in order to be able to respond better to local circumstances.

Heat is not just a serious problem for children. Adults are also affected, and this makes measures in daycare centers particularly relevant. The consumption of heat protection measures was further fueled by the country's heat action plan published in 2024. This plan provides explanations and recommendations for dealing with heat and is a guide not only for municipalities, but also for everyone who works with children.

Recommendations for heat-protective measures

The recommendations for daycare centers include both short-term and medium-term measures. Parents are encouraged to equip their children with clothing and sun protection, while the facility ensures that the buildings are designed for heat. Short-term measures include personal recommendations for action such as applying lotion, seeking shade and regular ventilation. In the long term, heat protection should also be taken into account in urban planning.

Both the daycare providers, the parents and the daycare team share responsibility for the correct implementation. The daycare advisory board also plays an important role in discussing areas of responsibility and solution strategies. And with modern technology, the German Weather Service has provided a warning app that offers daily warnings about heat events and also has recommendations for personal heat protection.

In times of extreme weather events, it is crucial that everyone involved pulls together. With a good knack for taking the right measures, we can ensure the children's well-being even during the hottest days. If we offer the right protection, our little ones can continue to explore the world full of energy despite the heat.
