A 27-year-old man stole a beer bottle and immediately began running away after a store detective noticed his theft. This triggered the urge to chase, but the perpetrator reacted aggressively and threatened the detective with the stolen bottle. Fortunately, the federal police intervened, disarmed the man and were able to secure him with handcuffs.
The situation escalated further when the perpetrator attacked a police officer and tried to break away. He hit the detective in the forearm and thigh while he loudly insulted the emergency services. Despite a negative drug test, it turned out that the perpetrator was drunk with a blood alcohol level of 0.11. Pending the report, he is now being investigated for various crimes, including robbery and assault on law enforcement officers.

Almost at exactly the same time, at 6:13 p.m., a similar scene occurred in the same train station: a 16-year-old was caught stealing. She also appeared uncooperative and resisted being arrested by the store detective. With the support of the police, the young people were quickly arrested and their legal guardians were notified. After contact was made, the minor was allowed to leave the station again, but not without being charged with robbery.
These incidents shed light on a worrying trend; The number of thefts in Germany seems to be increasing. According to current statistics, there were already around 1.78 million thefts recorded by the police in 2022 - a worrying increase compared to previous years, as Statista documents. What is particularly alarming is that shoplifting is the most common form of theft, with over 344,000 cases.
Looking for suspects
The federal police are currently looking for suspects who committed a theft at Cologne Central Station on July 23, 2024. An incident in which a bag worth over 26,000 euros was stolen remains unsolved. The perpetrators disappeared towards Breslauer Platz and the police are asking the public for information about their identity and whereabouts. The overall situation requires a rethink in dealing with thefts and robberies, which are always present in Germany.
