Brüderstraße in Halle: Historical signs reveal a mysterious past!

A piece of history will soon come to life in Halle. Brüderstrasse, a remarkable place, will receive new explanatory signs informing about its historical significance. The official signs, which are realized by the Halle Community Foundation with financial support from Peter Breitkopf, Jürgen Engelhardt and Dirk Herold, are celebrated onNovember 12, 2025 at 3:30 p.mits inauguration on the corner of Brüderstraße and Kleine Steinstraße, like Hall spectrum reported.

The signs provide detailed information about the Pruve family, an important knightly family of the 13th and 14th centuries. Her influence as a knight and as a representative of the sovereign and the city council should not be underestimated. It is interesting that the name “Brüderstrasse” comes directly from the Pruve family, who once lived on Pruvestrasse.

A piece of the past

Brüderstraße has experienced a lot over the centuries. In the 17th century it was a highly respected "professor's street" due to the many important scientists who lived there. However, destruction during the Second World War and subsequent redesigns reduced the street's importance at the time. The Halle Community Foundation has made it its mission to revive the historical heritage of Brüderstraße.

This project is part of the “Education in Transition” project, which has been implemented by the community foundation since 2008. So far, around 300 streets in Halle have been equipped with explanatory signs. This project aims to inform citizens about the historical figures after whom the streets are named. Those interested can also sponsor a sign to help shape their city.

Interesting facts about street names

The name of a street is more than just a designation, it is a part of the city's history. Since the 11th to 13th centuries, streets have been named according to various criteria, such as craft guilds or important personalities. Wikipedia shows that street names are often a reflection of social developments. After the First World War, many streets were renamed to symbolize democratic values. There are now over 433,000 different street names in Germany, and they often tell their own stories.

In summary, it can be said that the new explanatory signs on Brüderstraße are not only a reminder of the Pruve family, but also an impetus to deal with the rich history of the city of Halle. For all those who would like to find out more and actively participate in the culture of remembrance, the Halle Community Foundation is available at any time.
