Berlin intended: 1,100 people are reminiscent of Sivas massacre of the Alevis

Around 1,100 people came together in Berlin today to commemorate a tragic incident that took place in Turkey 32 years ago. The demonstration led from Hermannplatz to Oranienplatz under the motto "Sivas 1993 - pogrom of Alevis". Those fateful events occurred on July 2, 1993, as a mob, raved about religious extremists who set fire to Madımak-Hotel in Sivas. 37 people, most of them Aleviten, found death. T-Online has been carried out regularly since then.

The attack is referred to by the Alevi community as "Katliam" (massacre) and symbolically stands for the decades of discrimination of this religious minority in Turkey. This accounts for about 15 to 20 percent of the population and has been exposed to inequality and prejudices since the foundation of the Republic of Türkiye in 1923. Among other things, the community calls for the recognition of its religious practices and the official recognition of the Cemevi as a prayer house. The Tagesspiegel reports that mahmoud reports Yetzboud from the Alevi community spoke on the protest and criticized the insufficient processing of the massacre by the Turkish government.

a dark chapter of history

The massacres in the Alevis are part of a dark culture of remembrance that extends far back, including serious incidents such as the destruction of Dersim 1938 or the pogroms in Kahramanmaraş 1978 and Çorum 1980. The surviving Aziz Nesin, a writer, fought until the publication of Salman Rushdie's controversial work "The Satanian Verses ”. He was a guest of honor at the cultural festival, which was visited by many of the later victims and made it clear how public mood and political rhetoric contributed to the massacre. The Federal Center for Political Education shows that the Alevites still fight against discrimination and clearly define their identity and cultural differences within their own community.

To raise your voice and draw attention to your rights, continue to mobilize Alevis regularly for your concerns. Today's demonstration in Berlin is another step to illustrate the dangers that result from a decades of culture of silence and contempt. At the same time, she shows the cohesion and determination of the Alevi community to fight for her rights and recognition.
