Peaceful protest in Hellersdorf: Orange Bank says no to violence!

There is a peaceful atmosphere today in the vibrant capital, more precisely at Leon-Jessel-Platz, also known as Pilz-Platz. Here, sparrows fight over baguette crumbs, while an impressive fountain in the shape of a large stone mushroom makes for a special sight. There are also orange trash cans in this place that make you think with the words “Bucket Loves You.” Orange is not only a striking color, but also symbolizes the anti-violence movement.

The importance of this project is particularly emphasized by the commitment of the Marzahn-Hellersdorf district. An orange bench was installed here to send a strong message against violence against women. The inscription “Hellersdorf says no to violence” not only conveys a clear message, but also leads to a QR code that refers to advice and help offers. This is particularly important because, according to the Federal Office for Family and Civil Society Responsibilities, around 40% of women in Germany have experienced physical violence since the age of 16.

A new sign for an old problem

District mayor Nadja Zivkovic (CDU) emphasized the diversity and frightening extent of violence against women in our society. In order to draw attention to this problem, the bank was initiated as part of a campaign by the Zonta Club. This international women's service club aims to strengthen women's rights and raise society's awareness of these issues, originally through orange lighting, among other things.

A successful approach, as the campaign from the Rhein-Sieg district shows. The concept of orange banks was launched there in 2021. The idea behind this project was to draw attention to the grievances that became even more obvious as a result of the corona pandemic and the energy crisis in a particularly sustainable manner and with a good knack for solutions. The BVG (Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe) is also actively involved in the matter and has given its social media accounts the motto “Because we love you” to send a sign of solidarity.

Community and engagement

Another notable place where this movement continues is Bremen. On December 12, 2024, the fourth orange bench was installed as part of the ZONTA says NO campaign against violence against women. Attentive citizens gathered at the entrance to the Sport Lounge Munte gym to celebrate the event. Managing director Jürgen Kohne and his team were actively involved in the setup, while Prof. Dr. Johanna Myrzyk, President of the ZONTA Club Bremen, explained the key points of the campaign.

In her emotional speech, Kohne spoke about the increasing violence in society and the need to take decisive action against it. The ceremony ended with a convivial round of punch and cookies, which only reinforced the sense of community and positive mood.

In summary, initiatives like the orange bank send an important signal. They remind us that it is up to all of us to stand up for women's safety and rights. Visitors and residents are invited to take a look at the offers and support centers and to actively contribute to combating violence.
