Major fire in Gohrischheide: Fire brigade fights against devastating flames!

In Gohrischheide, a former military training area in Saxony, a massive forest fire has severely affected the region. The flames are spreading unstoppably and have already reached an area of around 600 hectares. The fire brigade is on site with numerous emergency services and has been fighting the major fire for three days, which has also spread to the neighboring areas in Brandenburg. Reports from rbb24 report considerable commitment by the firefighters, with two of them being seriously injured during the extinguishing work.

The fire brigade, which comes from both Saxony and Brandenburg, is on duty around the clock. Around 65 firefighters from Brandenburg are supporting the extinguishing work on site. In the first phase of fighting the fire, a major danger situation was declared as the wind was driving the flames towards Nieska, a district of Gröditz. Fortunately, the wind has died down in the last few hours, which has eased the situation on the Brandenburg side somewhat. The situation is also monitored from the air using helicopters that detect embers.

Evacuations and worrying developments

Due to the burning danger, several places were evacuated, including Heidehäuser, where a residential home for severely disabled people was also affected. Around 100 people, including 45 residents, had to be evacuated immediately. Residents of Lichtensee were also asked to evacuate, but received the all-clear shortly before midnight. People are urged to only take essentials, especially IDs and cash. It shows how quickly the situation can escalate, especially given the cause of the fire. The fire broke out near an explosive ordnance disposal service blast site, which poses additional risks.

The forest fire season in Germany extends from March to the end of September. This year in particular, the forest fires in the state of Brandenburg are a big issue, as there have already been over 200 fires - more than in the entire previous year. Statista shows that climate change, with increasing dry and hot periods, is a significant factor in the frequency of forest fires. While Europe is increasingly affected by these phenomena, Brandenburg is not spared. In Germany, over 1,200 hectares were destroyed by forest fires in 2023, underlining how serious the situation is.

Protection of nature and habitats

The Gohrischheide is not only a source of fire, but also a valuable nature reserve in which endangered breeding birds live. In the past, the problem of forest fires in this region increased, the largest of which occurred in June 2022. These fires not only have devastating effects on flora and fauna, but also endanger the habitats of numerous animals. The course of forest fires in Germany shows that the risk of fire is particularly high in regions affected by drought, which is exacerbated by climate change.

The situation in Gohrischheide illustrates the urgency of careful use of natural resources. Keeping a close eye on developments is essential and leaders are working to bring the flames under control. The emergency services are at their limits and there is currently no positive end in sight. For the local people it is now a matter of staying safe and hoping that the flames can soon be contained.
