Wild discovery: ponies and alpacas found in an overcrowded van!
There was recently a shocking discovery on Autobahn 10 near Birkenwerder in the Oberhavel district: a van was overloaded with animals. Six ponies, two alpacas, a donkey and a rhea were tightly packed in the vehicle and had neither enough space nor water. Police made this shocking discovery during a routine traffic stop at night star reported.
The 61-year-old driver from the Netherlands was unable to provide proof of ownership or the required certificates of origin for the animals. He claimed it was private, non-commercial transport. This statement raises questions, especially since the origin of the animals and the reasons for their transport remain unclear. In addition, the driver did not have any drinking water for the animals, which made the situation even more critical.
Strict regulations for animal transport
The EU has issued strict regulations for the transport of live vertebrates, as shown on bmleh.de is explained. All people involved in the transport are responsible for the welfare of the animals, including the transport company, driver and animal owner. They must ensure that legal provisions are complied with and that they have appropriate training and qualifications.
For transports that last longer than 65 kilometers, approval from the responsible authority is mandatory. This regulation is particularly important because transport companies must prove that they have suitable staff and equipment. For long-distance transport over 8 hours, additional documents such as emergency plans are even required. The conditions for such transports are much stricter and specified, for example with regard to temperature regulations and access to water for the animals.
The discovery of the overweight animals meant that the veterinary office had to act quickly. The animals were housed in a nearby animal farm in order to free them from their predicament and provide them with appropriate care. This situation shows once again how important it is to ensure compliance with EU regulations and to put the welfare of animals first.
Finally, it remains to be said: It is the responsibility of all of us to ensure that such incidents are avoided in the future. Authorities must be vigilant and ensure that both regulations and animal welfare are taken seriously.
