Bird flu in Brandenburg: Nature and animal husbandry under criticism!
On November 2, 2025, concerns about the spread of bird flu in Brandenburg are still present. According to a report by Daily Mirror More than 150,000 geese, ducks and chickens from various farms have already been killed to prevent the virus from spreading further. A goose farm in the Uckermark is particularly affected, where the H5N1 subtype virus was detected.
A total of ten cases of bird flu have been registered in kept birds in Brandenburg. However, the exact cause of this outbreak remains unclear. The nature conservation association Nabu has launched an online petition entitled “Poultry industry threatens cranes”, which has already been supported by over 11,000 people. According to Nabu, there is a widespread opinion that it is not wild birds, but rather the poultry industry that is the main cause of the outbreaks.
Dispute over the causes
Christiane Schröder, state manager of Nabu Brandenburg, sharply criticized the poultry industry and accused it of a lack of responsibility. The SPD agricultural politician Johannes Funke is surprised by the petition and accuses the nature conservation associations of not having thoroughly researched the relevant facts. He emphasizes that the bird migration comes from countries where livestock populations are low.
Farmers President Hendrik Wendorff also commented on the allegations against the poultry industry. He sees the Nabu petition as a supposed “campaign against the farmers” and emphasizes the strict monitoring measures in the companies that are intended to contribute to the safety of animals and people.
A look outside the box
In summary, it can be said that both the challenges posed by bird flu and the small joys in everyday life - like a piece of pizza - are shaping our region at the moment. The exchange about responsibilities in agriculture will certainly continue, while the doors of pizzerias remain open to pamper us.
