Night flights of the Bundeswehr: tension over Brandenburg and Saxony-Anhalt!
In the coming days the sky over Brandenburg and Saxony-Anhalt will look completely different again. The Bundeswehr has announced military exercises with helicopter night flights that will take place from October 20th to 30th, 2025. The districts of Potsdam-Mittelmark, Wittenberg and Jerichower Land as well as other areas are affected. These exercises are intended to improve cooperation between specialized units of the Bundeswehr and NATO partners, especially during night operations from the air. The information was spread by the Bundeswehr's regional command in Potsdam via its Facebook page, as reported by Berliner Zeitung.
We have an interesting but also noisy time ahead, especially at night. In a similar context, we were able to observe in Göttingen and other cities in Hesse and North Rhine-Westphalia at the beginning of October how the Bundeswehr flew over the region with its attack helicopters. According to Tagesschau, these night flights are not only a training format, but also suitable for ensuring the pilots' operational fitness and imparting valuable knowledge to younger comrades. During these exercises, the helicopters, including the “Tiger” type, operate at speeds of up to 270 km/h, which is approximately the same as the speed of an ICE.
Night operations and noise pollution
However, with such nighttime operations, the Bundeswehr also brings with it a certain amount of noise pollution. Residents must expect that the night flights could wake them up. These are often low-level flights that take place at a height of less than 30 meters. Such maneuvers represent a major challenge for the pilots; Visibility is limited and further concentration is required.
The exercises are not just limited to Brandenburg and Saxony-Anhalt. It was discovered that the Bundeswehr has relocated its training areas in order to minimize the burden on the population in other regions. The wind of military operations is also blowing through other federal states, especially in times when the security situation is tense. That's why such exercises are taking place more and more frequently, which Zeit reports on.
A free telephone number is available for citizens who have questions or complaints about the upcoming night flights: (0800) 862 07 30. The coming days promise an eventful spectacle over the rooftops of the affected districts, which at the same time illustrates the challenges and the need for military training.
