Potsdam invests 1 million euros: Lottenhof becomes a meeting center!
In Potsdam there is news from Lottenhof, a place that will soon become a center for neighborhood and culture. The city of Potsdam has concluded a leasehold agreement with the Prussian Palaces and Gardens Foundation, which creates the basis for the future use of the area. As the State capital Potsdam reports, the Lottenhof will be used as a neighborhood and meeting place for the next 60 years. An important goal of the project is close cooperation with the residents and the Potsdam-West e.V. district network in order to revitalize the former excursion restaurant and create an open, inviting space for the community.
After the contract was initiated under the title “Lottenhof – Eastern Modernism at the Entrance to the World Heritage Site”, urban investments of around 1 million euros are expected. In addition, there is around 2 million euros in federal funding for this important construction project, which is being implemented as part of the “National Urban Development Projects” funding program. From autumn 2026, coordination to ensure usage during the construction phase is also planned.
A place for everyone
At the Lottenhof location, which is on the corner of Zwilling-Scholl-Straße and Kastanienallee in Potsdam-West, the vision is clear: a new socio-cultural neighborhood house is to be created that offers space for activities and encounters. The district network and the neighbors have already committed themselves to revitalizing the former excursion site. Open spaces are planned for community activities such as dancing, eating and learning. Every member of the community is invited to take part in this initiative and to actively shape the concept District network reveals.
But what exactly does this mean for residents? The Lottenhof will not only be a place for gatherings, but will also offer a space in which creative projects and health activities can take place. The hope is that this redesign will strengthen the community spirit and create a place for meeting and exchange in the long term.
Legal framework and heritable building law
The leasehold contract is a legal basis that has existed in Germany since 1900. It makes it possible to build structures on someone else's land without having to purchase the property, which represents an attractive opportunity for municipalities to actively invest in real estate development. The legal framework is in BGB regulated and guarantee both the property owners and those entitled to leasehold building rights that their interests are protected.
With a leasehold agreement, the city of Potsdam gains planning security, while those entitled to leasehold often benefit from moderate leasehold payments. This practice has proven itself over the years and supports sustainable urban developments.
Overall, it can be said that the Lottenhof is a promising project for Potsdam-West that not only changes the built landscape, but also makes an important contribution to the community. A place is being created here where people can come together, learn from each other and exchange ideas - and that's something that residents can really look forward to!
