Change in rain brings alert level: rivers in the Prignitz are rising!
In the Prignitz, the persistent rain is causing water levels in the rivers to rise, putting the authorities on alert. The situation has developed quickly: Alert level 1 has now been declared on the Dömnitz near Pritzwalk after the water level climbed above the critical mark of 1.90 meters. This event was documented by maz-online.de. Fortunately, the level has now fallen back below the alarm thresholds.
The Stepenitz near Wolfshagen behaves somewhat differently: within a week the water level has doubled and is now 1.22 meters. Despite the increase, no alert level was issued here. The Brandenburg State Environment Agency (LfU) has issued a flood warning for the Stepenitz and Dömitz rivers in order to inform the population in good time about possible flooding in low-lying floodplain areas and grassland near the banks. This report comes from tagesspiegel.de.

However, there is also positive news in the region: meteorologists expect the weather situation to calm down and the amount of rain to fall in the coming days. The water level of the Elbe near Wittenberge has risen in recent weeks and reached around 1.5 meters on July 12th, although it still remains a solid five meters in some places. The alert level for the Elbe only begins at this mark. According to the LfU experts, the risk of dramatic flood events can currently be assessed as low, even though the soil is already heavily saturated with water, which means that new rain can quickly reach the rivers.
The situation on other rivers such as the Elbe, Oder and Spree in Brandenburg remains stable: These are currently carrying more water than usual, but are not affected by flooding. In Saxony, however, warning level I is expected to be reached at the Schöna river gauge on the Elbe, which means the situation will continue to be monitored. The snow in the headwaters of the Jizera and Giant Mountains is melting due to the mild temperatures and has produced 40 to 75 liters of rain within a day. This could also have an impact on water levels, as maz-online.de notes.
So it remains to be seen how the situation will develop in the next few days. While the warnings should be taken seriously, there is no reason to panic at this time. The authorities are well informed and are monitoring the situation closely. The Prignitz remains under control for the time being - good news for the residents.
