Mayoral election in Jüterbog: Dimde and Lindner-Klopsch in a duel!

On June 30, 2025, the time had come: the mayoral election in Jüterbog, a town in the Teltow-Fläming district, brought exciting results that led to a runoff election. Sabrina Dimde, who ran for the Jüterbog citizens' alliance and the SPD, got 30.6% of the votes. The acting mayor Christiane Lindner-Klopsch, who appeared as an individual candidate, followed her with 29.3%. Only 70 votes separated the two candidates, which further fuels the tension in the race until the next election on July 20, 2025. Tilman Weber, also an individual applicant and with the motto “Fancy Jüterbog”, placed just behind Lindner-Klopsch with 29.1%.

Another candidate deliberately stood out: Sebastian Geess received 10.9% of the votes. Voter turnout was 52.4%, meaning 5,474 votes were cast out of 10,525 eligible voters. This shows that there is certainly interest in local events. Driven by a change in the town hall, this election comes after Arne Raue moved to the Bundestag. Raue, the first full-time AfD mayor in Brandenburg, received 33.6% of the first votes in the last federal election.

Runoff election and election events

The upcoming runoff election between Dimde and Lindner-Klopsch will have a lasting impact on the cityscape of Jüterbog. Since 1993, the citizens of Brandenburg have elected their mayors directly. This system was introduced to strengthen citizen participation and create a fairer reflection of political views. In Jüterbog, citizens are called upon to actively participate in democratic decision-making. This creates an exciting political climate in the city with around 13,000 inhabitants.

Traditions and voter behavior in Brandenburg should not be underestimated. While voter turnout stagnated in many regions, Jüterbog shows that things can also work differently. However, the reason for the sometimes low voter turnout often remains a mystery. Many people are not sufficiently informed about the duties of mayors. In addition, there is often a lack of time to get in direct contact with the candidates.

The look ahead

Citizens eligible to vote must prepare for the next election on July 20th to cast their vote for the future city leadership. How the runoff election will go remains to be seen. It is clear that the responsibility for municipal processes is great - and the mayor's role remains crucial. In Brandenburg, new regulations will apply at the municipal level from 2016: The minimum age for running for office has been lowered to 18 in order to offer younger people more opportunities to get involved in politics.

Stay tuned, because the political landscape in Jüterbog will soon change again. The coming weeks will show who can win the trust of voters and lead the city's fortunes. Further information can be found at daily news, Daily Mirror and Political education in Brandenburg find.
