Christian Döring: The book lover who picks up treasures!
Christian Döring has made a name for himself in the small but exquisite world of literature over the last 12 years. The experienced editor was recently a guest at the Warnitz readings at the Gasthof Deutsche Eiche and spoke about his work, which is associated with the loving publication of special books. How the northern courier reports, Döring took over the program management of the “Other Library” in 2011, a traditional series that was launched by Hans-Magnus Enzensberger and Franz Greno between 1985 and 2004. During his time, Döring edited around 150 titles, distributed over 12 new publications every year.
The first 36 volumes were printed using a complex metal typesetting process. Their covers are a real work of art: handmade paper, decorated with flowers and leaves, protected by elegant leather slipcases. Later, these individual editions gave way to artfully designed cardboard slipcases with colored title plates. Döring is a master in the selection and presentation of classics and forgotten literary treasures - original editions and German first editions are not uncommon.
The special evening
At the reading in Warnitz, Döring brought a few selected books with him and delighted his audience with lively stories. Among the titles presented were works such as “Japan's Ghosts” by Lafcadio Hearn and “I Graze My Brain Meadow” by Paul Valéry. The evening promoted the joy of tactile reading and invited those present to ask questions at the reading table and browse through the books. “The Other Library” was highlighted by Cornelia Jentzsch as the most beautiful book series and underlined Döring's philosophy of only publishing books that he himself enjoys reading.
Döring looks back on an impressive career in which he has always placed great value on collaborating with various players in book production. There is no fixed program, which makes “The Other Library” something special. His passion for books and literature is infectious and is reflected in the variety of titles published under his aegis.
A game with points
Apart from the literary delights, there is also something new to report about the gaming castles in Cologne. The card game Cribbage is enjoying growing popularity and offers exciting entertainment for two players. The rules are simple: The goal is to be the first to reach 121 points - a game structure that consists of three parts: the deal, the game and the show. Each player strategically lays down cards to collect combinations and score points, while the tingle alarm is fueled by unexpected twists and turns. There are even variants like Skunks, where the winner triumphs with a high score while the opponent falls far behind.
In today's hectic world, both the love of literature and the joy of classic card games are a welcome change. These hobbies bring people together and create space for social evenings. So if you need a break from everyday life, you should look forward to the next readings or game evenings - literature and games have a special place in our hearts.
