Uckermark in film fever: cinemas celebrate big awards!
There is reason to be happy again in the exciting world of film: the Berlin-Brandenburg Cinema Program Prize was awarded for the 27th time. This award recognizes the outstanding achievements of cinema makers from the region and of course also celebrates their commitment to cultural diversity and cinemas. According to nordkurier.de, two cinemas from the Uckermark received awards: The Multicultural Center (MKC) Templin can look forward to a main prize of 40,000 euros, while the FilmforUM Schwedt was awarded 15,000 euros.
A total of 1.5 million euros went into funding 70 cinemas in Berlin and Brandenburg. The prize amounts vary and are between 10,000 and 40,000 euros. With this measure, the state film funding agency Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg has sent a clear signal to support cinema culture in the capital and its surroundings. In his speech, Florian Graf, head of the Berlin Senate Chancellery, emphasized the importance of cinemas as places of gathering.
A strong balance sheet from Templin
What is particularly pleasing is the news that the MKC Templin has been awarded for the twelfth time and is one of the best cinema locations in Brandenburg. Managing director Kathrin Bohm-Berg was visibly proud of the recognition of the program quality and reflected on the positive development after the difficult times of the corona pandemic. In 2024, visitor numbers were able to return to pre-pandemic levels. With 14,000 visitors, there was an increase of 4.5% compared to 2023.
These successes are the result of a carefully curated program that includes numerous special events and temporary marketing activities. The initiative is supported by both full-time employees and committed volunteer members of MKC Templin e.V. A special highlight was the tenth anniversary of the Uckermark Mobile Cinema, which consistently records high visitor numbers for children and young people.
The awards in detail
The award ceremony takes place in a celebratory setting and both cinemas are very happy about the recognition. Cinema director Doreen Müller from FilmForUM Schwedt and her colleague Martin Grunert emphasize that they are determined to further promote the cinema as a cultural location. Here is an overview of the prizes awarded and the distribution of funding:
| Location | grant | Number of cinemas |
|---|---|---|
| Berlin | 1,000,000 euros | 44 |
| Brandenburg | 500,000 euros | 26 |
Looking to the future, the Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg announced that it would support cinemas with an additional 6 million euros this year and next year. This shows the commitment of politicians to ensure the diversity of the cinema landscape in the region and to support the cinemas. And that's important - at a time when streaming services and television channels are becoming increasingly competitive.
A consistently positive picture emerges for the cinema landscape in Berlin and Brandenburg. The Cinema Program Awards are a valuable recognition that not only recognizes the best cinemas, but also promotes future investments and cultural programs to ensure the great cinema experience. Thanks to the joint efforts of cinema operators and politicians, nothing stands in the way of a flourishing year of cinema culture.
