First Super E20 gas station in Germany: Refuel in an environmentally friendly way in Mannheim!
The first Super E20 gas station will open in Mannheim on June 17, 2025 to promote climate-friendly fuels and reduce emissions.

First Super E20 gas station in Germany: Refuel in an environmentally friendly way in Mannheim!
The trend towards climate-friendly fuels is taking hold in Germany! The new Super E20 fuel, which contains up to 20 percent bioethanol, has been available at the first gas station in Mannheim since October 2023. This innovative blend is intended to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions compared to conventional gasoline such as Super E5. The ADAC reports that the use of bioethanol, depending on the manufacturing process, can even emit up to 80 percent fewer greenhouse gases. The Super E20 is currently undergoing a closed fleet test in which, among other things, vehicles from Südzucker AG and products from CropEnergies are being tested.
As the ADAC further explains, the Super E10, which already exists, could lead to potential savings of up to three million tons of CO₂ annually. However, to make E20 fuel usable for all drivers, a few steps are required. The ADAC is calling for an adjustment of the standards for gasoline fuels, specifically DIN EN 228, in order to use more climate-friendly fuels more widely. In addition, car manufacturers must technically approve their vehicles for E20 use. The cost of the new fuel could be in the range of Super E10, which makes it interesting for consumers.
New technologies and their effects
But it's not just fuel that's happening. Electric cars are also experiencing an upswing. An updated study by the ADAC shows that their environmental performance is significantly better when using renewable energies in production. The advantages of electric vehicles when using renewable electricity pay for themselves after just 25,000 to 30,000 kilometers. In contrast, the payback of the German electricity mix is set at a minimum of 45,000 to 60,000 kilometers. These developments illustrate how important the expansion of renewable electricity sources is for the production and operation of vehicles.
As the Federal Environment Agency states, the transport sector in Germany depends heavily on liquid fuels. Despite the efficiency gains achieved, greenhouse gas emissions from transport are stagnating at a high level. Implementing measures to reduce emissions is essential, including electrifying transport and switching to sustainable fuels, which should also be applied to shipping and aviation.
The path to a sustainable future
The ADAC and the Federal Environment Agency agree that alternative fuels such as bioethanol and synthetic fuels are crucial for climate-friendly mobility through further innovations. It can be assumed that the trend towards more environmentally friendly transport, which focuses on alternative drives, can no longer be stopped. Not only new technologies such as electric cars, but also fuels such as the Super E20 are important steps towards more sustainable mobility.
If we take a look at the standards of the future, it becomes clear that only together with a rethink in society and industry can we achieve the climate goals and shape a more mobile and greener future. The use of renewable resources and innovative approaches to vehicle technology make up a good part of the journey. Who would have thought that we would soon be able to fill up at the gas station with a clear conscience?
