Heat wave Julia”: temperatures up to 40 degrees – warnings for the region!

The heat wave is reaching Germany today, and the high pressure influence of “Julia” is causing temperatures to skyrocket, especially in the south and west. In cities like Geilenkirchen (NRW) and Freiburg (Baden-Württemberg) up to 33 degrees are measured. The official heat warning from the German Weather Service (DWD), which applies to large parts of the country, is particularly worrying, as local temperatures could even be close to 40 degrees Picture reported.

The challenge of the heat is also being felt by residents, with the risk of storms increasing as the week progresses, especially with the warm, humid air. While northern and eastern Germany are initially exempt from the high temperatures, fellow citizens should listen to the recommendations of meteorologist Jacqueline Kernn: sun protection and sufficient fluid intake are mandatory!

Health risks in the heat

The Health Minister of Hesse, Diana Stolz, has issued warnings for particularly vulnerable groups, such as older people, infants and people with chronic illnesses. According to the World Health Organization The risks of heat exhaustion and heat stroke increase during heat waves. In addition, existing illnesses such as cardiovascular or respiratory diseases can be exacerbated by prolonged heat.

Accordingly, people should avoid physical exertion and drink regularly to prevent dehydration. It is particularly important not to leave children and pets in parked cars and to stay in cool places to reduce heat stress.

The risk of forest fires increases

Another aspect of the current heat wave is the high risk of forest fires, which, according to current measurements, has even reached level 4 in Lower Saxony. In many other regions of Europe, forest fires are being fought; Emergency services are required, especially in Albania and Montenegro, while one soldier tragically lost his life in an accident. The situation also looks critical in Spain and Portugal as the risk of fire increases. Federal Environment Agency highlights that wildfire smoke can cause significant health problems, particularly for vulnerable groups.

The long-term challenges posed by climate change and more frequent heatwaves are becoming increasingly clear. Last year, around 15,600 people died in Germany as a result of extreme temperatures. If high temperatures continue, mortality is expected to increase by 1 to 6 percent for every degree Celsius increase, which could mean several thousand additional cases by the middle of this century.

In summary, the heat wave that is now gripping Germany is not only unpleasant, but also poses serious health risks. It is high time to take good care of yourself and those around you and take the right protective measures. The coming days will be characterized by changeable weather with showers and thunderstorms in the northwest, but until then we are required to actively prepare for the heat.
