Heat wave brings the first forest fires in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania!

The heat wave in Germany is causing alarming waves, and this is evident not least in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, where temperatures climbed up to 34 degrees Celsius last weekend. These extreme conditions led to an increased fire risk, which posed major challenges for the emergency services. According to Wismar.fm, several fires have been reported in the region, which urgently point out the risks of drought and heat.

A dramatic incident occurred in Wöbbelin, where a fire broke out on the premises of a motor vehicle company on Sunday evening. Two garbage cans and a stack of tires were on fire, which resulted in a mobile home and a car as well as the hall door of a workshop being badly damaged. State Road 71 had to be completely closed while the fire was extinguished and 41 firefighters were on duty. The criminal police have already started an investigation into the cause of the fire, while the property damage is estimated at around 50,000 euros.

More fires in the region

Also on Sunday there was a fire in Züsedom, where a caravan caught fire. The flames spread to an adjacent arborvitae hedge, and 30 firefighters prevented the fire from spreading to an empty residential building. Suspicion falls on a neighbor who may have left a fire unattended and ignited dry grass. The material damage caused is estimated at around 5,000 euros.

Another fire occurred on Sunday afternoon at a campsite in Röbel, where a mobile home burst into flames for unknown reasons. The police were able to quickly extinguish the fire, but there was still damage to surrounding caravans worth around 10,000 euros. Here, too, a fire investigator is called in to investigate the incident.

The risk of forest fires is increasing

A forest fire that broke out on Saturday evening near Grabow in a sparse forest area of around 2,500 square meters was particularly alarming. Thanks to the quick reactions of the fire departments from Grabow, Wanzlitz and Karstädt, the fire was quickly brought under control. The German Weather Service had already declared the highest forest fire danger level of 5 for the southern parts of the country. However, the situation improved with the rain on Monday night, meaning forest fire danger levels 1 to 2 were expected for Monday.

According to the Forest Fire Danger Index, the risk of forest fires in Germany is variable, with the scale ranging from 1 (very low danger) to 5 (very high danger). There has been an increase in forest fires in recent years, particularly due to extreme temperatures and drought. While forest fire areas decreased significantly between 1991 and 2017, weather-related threats increased in many regions, as the Federal Environment Agency reports.

The causes of fires are often due to negligence or arson. When fighting these fires, wind speed and the ability of the fire department to respond play a crucial role. Therefore, continuous improvement of systems and training of emergency services is essential in order to be able to respond effectively to the increasing weather conditions that are conducive to forest fires.
