Karower Kreuz: Hope for year -round rail traffic - reports positive!

In the region around the Karower Kreu, there is new hope for reactivating the rail connections. The Transport Club Germany (VCD) and the Südbahn citizens' initiative are vigorous to permanently revitalize the largely decommissioned Karower Kreuz. Currently, only a limited weekend service runs from the end of May to mid -September, which for a region with so much potential for leisure opportunities is not sufficient. Clemens Russell, spokesman for the BI Südbahn, therefore requires a year-round range of trains to increase the quality of life and promote the turnaround in mobility, reports the Nordkurier .

The federal states of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania (MV) and Brandenburg commissioned an expert opinion on the profitability of the route network to meet the challenges. Although the results of this report have not yet been made public, an inquiry in the Brandenburg state parliament has given information on the fact that the benefit of reactivation exceeds the costs. This is an essential prerequisite for the application for federal funding that is urgently needed for the expansion of the rail infrastructure.

common concept for rail traffic

In addition, five counties, including three from MV and two from Brandenburg, presented a common concept to expand rail traffic at the Karower Kreuz. The aim is to revive the Karower Kreuz near Plau am See, the part of the Südbahn from Parchim to Waren (Müritz) and the north-south route between Prignitz and Güstrow. The planning stipulates that travelers in Karow can change in all directions in the future. A new regional express from Berlin to Rostock should also be included in the planning. The trains could reach speeds of up to 120 km/h, but this requires comprehensive renovations of rails and train stations, such as NDR reported.

The ministries of both federal states have recently agreed on this procedure. This increases the expectation of a positive development for mobility in the region. The state chairman of the VCD Nordost, Heiner von Marschall, now urgently demands specific decisions to ensure attractive rail traffic in the districts of Ludwigslust-Parchim and Mecklenburg Lake District.

A look at the mobility turnaround

Another aspect is climate policy. An extensive study by Fraunhofer Iese and Fraunhofer iml shows how important it is to achieve the current climate protection goals. Public mobility, especially buses, play a central role. Many people with little energy promote these means of transport and do not need any additional infrastructure such as seems that makes them more efficient. In many rural and suburban regions, where your own car is often used, there is an urgent need for action. The public transport is often unattractive due to poor clocks, lack of flexibility and high driving prices. Thoughts about this were discussed in workshops and surveys, whereby clear recommendations were made to focus on the users and increase the attractiveness of bus and train, such as Fraunhofer iese

Developments related to the Karower Kreuz and rail traffic in the region show that there are many actors who stand up for a positive change. It remains exciting how the plans are concretized in the coming months and how the implementation will be promoted. For the citizens, this could not only bring an improvement in mobility, but also mean a noticeable increase in the quality of life in the region.
