New cooperation strengthens health care in northwest Mecklenburg!
In a sensational initiative, the Health Department of Northwest Mecklenburg launched a new cooperation with the MSH Medical School Hamburg on October 18, 2025. This partnership aims to significantly advance teaching, research and knowledge transfer in key health areas. There are already hopes that new specialists will settle in the district as well as successors who will take over existing medical practices. These developments are a positive sign for healthcare in the region and come at a time when the public health service is facing numerous challenges.
As part of this cooperation, MSH Medical School students will not only acquire theoretical knowledge, but will also have the opportunity to experience the public health service live. For this purpose, internships, internships and joint courses are planned at the Wismar Health Department. Such measures are important to sensitize future professionals to the reality of healthcare and to sharpen their professional skills.
Interdisciplinary research projects
Another focus of the cooperation is on interdisciplinary research projects. In these projects, doctors, health scientists, psychologists and social educators will work together to address current issues such as environmental medicine, infection protection, mental health and crisis management. According to specialist service manager Saban Omer Oglou, these projects are essential as the public health service will increasingly be confronted with the challenges of climate change, pandemics, mental illness and demographic change.
Managing director Ilona Renken-Olthoff underlines the importance of the cooperation and sees it as an important step towards intensifying interdisciplinary and interprofessional training. The close cooperation between the university and the health department promotes a sustainable exchange that is intended to have a positive impact on the quality of health care.
Education and professional development
The importance of good training in the healthcare sector is also shown by what the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences offers. The Interdisciplinary Health Care and Management (IGM) course is aimed at experienced specialists in physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, midwifery and nursing. The focus is not only on expanding skills, but also on qualifications for managerial and controlling tasks.
The part-time course imparts scientific basics and management skills and promotes exchange with other professional groups. This enables participants to actively participate in the further development of the healthcare system. In times when demographic change, chronic illnesses and technological advances influence each other, cross-sector, interdisciplinary care is more in demand than ever. The collaboration of different health professions and the adaptation of information and care offerings are crucial for the efficient use of resources.
The cooperation between the North West Mecklenburg Health Department and the MSH Medical School Hamburg represents a promising step towards sustainable healthcare. Further information about the supporting projects can be found in the reports from Northern Courier, de Gruyter Brill and HAW Hamburg.
