Dispute over Literaturhaus: Mayor resigns – Klütz in turmoil!
On October 27, 2025, a non-public meeting of city representatives took place in Klütz, which was overshadowed by a conflict over the local literature house. The focus of the debate was the early conclusion of the fee contract with Oliver Hintz, the head of the literary house. As the Baltic Sea newspaper reported, the current mayor Jürgen Mevius announced that a decision had been made; however, he remained tight-lipped about the details. It can be assumed that Hintz's contract is set to expire at the end of the year; he was released from his duties the previous week and is no longer allowed to enter the Literaturhaus.
The conflict over the termination has its roots in the mayor's cancellation of a reading by the Jewish journalist Michel Friedman, which led Hintz to violent accusations of anti-Semitism against the decision-makers. While Mevius cited the financial aspects as the main reason for the decision, Hintz sees a deeper problem behind it. Mevius, who had the support of parts of local politics and the population, resigned to allow a new beginning, while at the same time facing the allegations.
Political consequences and new elections
The political situation in Klütz is tense. Mevius' resignation is linked to the increasing allegations, and his dismissal from honorary civil service was decided on November 1st. Guntram Jung, who is not running for re-election, will take over the office until a new mayor is elected on February 1, 2024. The city seems to be in a state of upheaval that is affecting both residents and Mevius's companions.
However, what is burning on the minds of citizens, not just in the small town of Klütz: dealing with critical voices in society is becoming increasingly important. BitChute, a platform that is repeatedly criticized for its content by extreme right-wingers and conspiracy theorists, is an example of how these discussions also take place in other areas. The platform, which launched in 2017, has emerged as a niche for users who can no longer publish on major social networks. This also shows how much the opinion landscape has changed in the digital age and how important dialogue about such topics is becoming.
The events surrounding the Literaturhaus and the discussions on platforms like BitChute test the limits of freedom of expression and responsibility in a cultural society. If Klütz sets the right course in the coming period, it could be important for both the local culture and the political landscape.
