Living in Rostock: Solutions for the housing shortage in the live stream!
On October 27th, an exciting NDR talk will take place in the Rostock Kunsthalle, under the motto “Living in Rostock: scarce, expensive, hopeless?” the pressing problems of the housing market are discussed. The live stream starts at 8 p.m. on ndr.de/talkvorort. People from various walks of life, including families, students, seniors and professionals, are invited to take part in the discussion that addresses the growing city and the lack of affordable housing. Of course, the results of a survey will also be discussed, which covers important topics such as rent prices, living space and the quality of life in all parts of the city in order to present solutions.
The event will be moderated by Silke Janz and Ramon Gerwien from the NDR Ostseestudio. Among those taking part are the mayor of Rostock, Eva-Maria Kröger (left), and Roland Blank, board member of the “Schifffahrt Hafen Rostock” housing company. Christian Hanke, neighborhood manager in Dierkow, and Andreas Krüger, architect and former mayor of Bentwisch, will also take part in the discussion. In this way, various perspectives are examined that aim to reform the housing market in Rostock and adapt it to the needs of the population.
Current rental prices and rent index
In order to create a solid basis for this discussion, take a look at Rostock's qualified rent index, which has been in force since May 1, 2024. This is based on a detailed market analysis and helps tenants and landlords to estimate the local comparative rent. The relevance of the rent index in the context of the rent cap that has been in effect since October 2018 should not be neglected. This limits rent increases for re-lettings to a maximum of 10 percent above the local reference rent and also means that the rent may increase by a maximum of 15 percent within three years - instead of the previous 20 percent.
The average rental prices in Rostock are now 7.13 euros per square meter, which represents an increase of 0.88 euros since the last rent index in 2021. In order to promote transparency in the housing market, a free online rent calculator is available to help tenants determine the typical local comparative rent. If you are looking for more information, you will find it in the free rent index brochure, which is available for download.
An outlook on the living situation
For many Rostock residents, the issue of living space is a constant companion. The survey on the topics of the discussion group shows: There is a great need for more living space and a better quality of life, along with the call to build and plan faster. The ongoing housing shortage is an urgent problem that not only affects urban development, but also the everyday lives of Rostock residents.
How families, students and seniors can deal with rising rental prices will certainly be a central topic in today's session. Many hope that this discussion will not only develop new ideas, but also find concrete solutions that will sustainably improve the housing market in Rostock. So stay tuned when the exciting discussion starts at 8 p.m. on ndr.de/talkvorort.
