Merz visits Ypsomed: Gold for Schwerin acrobats and more!
The visit of Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) to Schwerin had all the ingredients needed to bring the city into the public eye. The Chancellor was inspired by the impressive achievements of the Swiss company Ypsomed, which produces injection pens in the heart of the Mecklenburg state capital to support people with chronic diseases such as diabetes. The company's success is so great that a second factory is being built on the existing site, which will increase the number of employees to around 1,000. This development is not only an economic boon, but also underlines Schwerin's importance as a center for health innovations.
While Merz is in the city, the citizens also enjoy culinary highlights. The bistro “La Bouche et El Pato” has established itself as an insider tip and is listed in the Michelin guide. There, guests can enjoy an exclusive four-course menu accompanied by fine wines. Delicacies and fine wines from the region make the evening perfect.
Sporting successes and social challenges
But it's not just the economy and gastronomy that are causing excitement. A trio of girls from Schwerin experienced a real fairytale at the national sports acrobat competition in the Palmberg Arena and surprisingly won the gold medal. Over 300 athletes from 42 clubs took part, including 45 athletes from Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania who competed in 18 formations. Such successes show how much talent there is in the region and give the city a positive face.
A dark chapter, however, is illuminated by Doc Caro, who examines a shocking incident in her current report: an ex-police officer ran over the car of a 65-year-old woman in a 30 zone at a speed of 140 km/h, who died in this tragic accident. In such an emotional context, the city's high crime rate, which was over 17,000 crimes per 100,000 inhabitants in 2007, becomes clear once again.
Schwerin: A city full of contrasts
Schwerin, the capital of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, has a lot to offer: With around 96,000 inhabitants, it is the least populated state capital in Germany. Surrounded by a total of eleven lakes, including Lake Schwerin, the city is a picturesque destination with a charming old town. Schwerin looks back on a long history that dates back to 1018. The range of facets that make up this city extends from the residence of the Duchy of Mecklenburg-Schwerin to its current role as an innovative location.
The current mayor Rico Badenschier (SPD) has led the city since 2016 and certainly has a good handle on the challenges that arise here every day. With twin cities like Milwaukee in Wisconsin and a clear focus on educational offerings through two universities, Schwerin is positioning itself for the future. The plans for the new Ypsomed plant could open up new perspectives for many residents in the near future and show once again: Something is happening in Schwerin!
The city's diversity ensures that it is at the top of the list of interesting places in Germany. Anyone who decides to travel or visit this charming city will not be disappointed and can enjoy the great economic potential and cultural highlights at the same time.
