New hiking trail in Greifswald: Eldena gets spectacular views!
A lot is happening in Greifswald in the area of local recreation and infrastructure. A new hiking trail between Eldena and Friedrichshagen has recently been planned, which will run like a green thread along the Bodden. This 1.6-mile-long trail will not only highlight the beauty of nature, but will also feature a new bird-watching tower, informative panels on various conservation topics and a swimming area. Great news, that Ostsee-Zeitung reported that are the clear approval of the main committee for this project and the remarkable funding of 90% from KfW Bank. With estimated construction costs of around 750,000 euros, the city has shown a good hand here.
The hiking trail will be exclusively accessible to pedestrians in order to protect the adjacent bird sanctuary. In addition, the path will be a maximum of one meter wide and should be prepared using simple means. Plans include, among other things, a longer boardwalk over a boggy stream mouth and a small bridge over the Hoher Graben. The Share Greifswald portal also points out that construction work is scheduled to begin in spring 2026 after the tenders were issued at the beginning of the year.
Heartbeat of the City: A New Approach to Nature
But what does that mean for the residents? Student Sophia Bures is the best example. She regularly commutes from her home in Wüst Eldena to Greifswald because she is unsuccessfully looking for a suitable apartment in the city. The housing market in Greifswald is a challenge for many: high rents and small apartment sizes - some units cost up to 600 euros for just 30 square meters. A circumstance that many students and young people find intolerable. This also reflects the general situation, which is characterized by numerous delays in construction projects.
It's no secret that various construction projects are underway in Greifswald. The development of the school center and the theater at Ellernholzteich are already several years behind schedule, and a planned roundabout is only expected to be functional in ten years. Such delays shape the local infrastructure and affect not only the housing market, but also the quality of life of citizens.
Diversity for those seeking relaxation
The expansion of the circular path around the Ellernholzteich should still provide positive impulses. With a length of around 1.1 kilometers, this path is being renovated and redesigned to improve pedestrian and bicycle traffic. New lounge areas, benches and even barbecue areas are to be set up, and new trees will also be planted to strengthen Greifswald's green lungs. This information illustrates the city's efforts to increase the quality of recreation and integrate nature into citizens' everyday lives.
In the long term, with these projects, Greifswald could not only address the challenges of the housing market, but also create new spaces for exciting leisure activities. While the complex issues of budget management and citizen participation continue to play a role, it is to be hoped that the city's residents will soon be able to benefit from a richer range of leisure activities.
