AfD leads survey in Saxony-Anhalt: Is sole government approaching?

An exciting year lies ahead for Saxony-Anhalt! The state election will take place on September 6, 2026 and today's poll results show that the political landscape is undergoing huge changes. According to the current Saxony-Anhalt trend from Infratest Dimap, the AfD leads with an impressive result of 39 percent, followed by the CDU, which has 27 percent. The Left is also in a solid place with 13 percent. But the SPD fell to its lowest level at just 7 percent, while the Greens and FDP ended up below the 5 percent hurdle and would therefore not be represented in the new state parliament. MDR reports on the explosive possibility of a sole government for the AfD, which seems quite possible for some political observers.

It is interesting that a majority of 47 percent of those surveyed prefer a CDU-led state government. But that has its pitfalls: the current Prime Minister Reiner Haseloff, who is seen as the most popular politician with 59 percent, will no longer run. He has proposed Sven Schulze as his successor, but the economics minister still seems to be unknown to some voters. In the survey, almost half of those surveyed said they did not know Schulze. Die Zeit highlights that Ulrich Siegmund, the AfD's top candidate, is also a blank slate for more than half of those surveyed.

Political changes in sight

The podcast by Malte Pieper and Marc Rath, editor-in-chief of the Mitteldeutsche Zeitung and Volksstimme, sheds further light on this exciting situation. Rath explains that, given the current polls, the AfD could become a possible party with an absolute majority. The question is also raised as to which political paths would be necessary in Saxony-Anhalt in order to unite society. The coming elections could well bring about fundamental changes that go beyond just the numbers. MDR

The mood among voters seems tense and it remains to be seen how the political forces will develop before next year's election. In the current constellation, an alliance of CDU, SPD and FDP governs Saxony-Anhalt. But with the AfD in the leadership role, other parties probably have to fear for their presence in the state parliament. This definitely gives hope for an exciting election year. The next edition of the podcast has been announced for October 3rd, the Day of German Unity, and promises interesting insights into the further development of the political landscape in Saxony-Anhalt.
