Anhalt-Bitterfeld district takes over sponsorship of the synagogue museum

From 2026, the Anhalt-Bitterfeld district will take over the sponsorship of the Gröbzig Synagogue Museum. This was officially announced today, August 15, 2025, through a contract signing between the State Chancellery and the Ministry of Culture in Magdeburg. The aim of this takeover is to fulfill the country's long-term obligations to the Jewish communities. Over the last three years, the museum has also received more than 500,000 euros in institutional funding to continue its important tasks in education and culture.

The Gröbzig Synagogue Museum Association is being converted into a support association. This restructuring is intended to help secure the museum's sustainable future. In a statement, Culture Minister Rainer Robra (CDU) emphasized how valuable the museum is as a cultural and historical place and as a partner for schools in Saxony-Anhalt.

A look at the development of the museum

A significant step into the museum's future was the opening of a new permanent exhibition in November 2024. This highlights the history and heritage of the Jewish community in the region and is intended to help promote awareness of cultural heritage. Renovation work on the roof of the synagogue building is also planned in order to preserve the structural substance of the important location.

Given the rich history of the Jewish communities, some of which dates back to the Sephardic period, the museum is a place where not only the past is documented, but also present cultural and spiritual experiences can take place. For those interested in Jewish culture, the Portuguese Israelite Community offers a variety of religious and cultural events - from Shabbat celebrations to educational programs.

A lively place for all generations

The community is open to people of all ages and organizes events that interweave tradition and modern life. There are numerous programs available that promote social growth and provide support in times of need. This means that young people in particular can flourish in an inspiring environment and come to terms with their origins.

In an exciting local context, the Gröbzig Synagogue remains on track, not just as a museum, but as a vibrant space of dialogue and cultural exchange. The route to the museum, sponsored by the Anhalt-Bitterfeld district, remains an important contribution to the promotion of Jewish culture and education in Germany. Therefore, the future support association is more than just an organizer - it could become a hub for intercultural understanding and exchange.

For anyone interested in the various aspects of Jewish heritage and culture, the Gröbzig Synagogue remains a place of inspiration and an important point of contact. And so you can say: life pulsates here, history is brought to life here.
