Semi-trailer accident in Lamstedt: B495 blocked for hours!
On Monday, September 1st, 2025, around 1 p.m. there was a spectacular traffic accident in Lamstedt-Hollnseth, on federal highway 495. The 35-year-old driver of a tractor-trailer had probably lost control of his vehicle and was just before a right-hand bend when the tractor-trailer veered off the road to the right. The tractor got into a non-water-bearing ditch, hit a telephone pole and then turned in the opposite direction of travel. Fortunately, the driver was uninjured.
However, the empty semi-trailer of the tractor-trailer turned out to be a real traffic obstruction. It completely blocked both lanes of the federal highway and caused significant traffic jams in the area. The material damage caused is estimated at a mid-five-digit euro amount. The recovery of the tractor-trailer was carried out by a specialist company from Bremervörde and lasted until around 5 p.m. until the road was finally reopened. The federal highway 495 is a very busy route, especially in the directions of Bremervörde and onwards to other cities.
Causes and consequences of the accident
The exact reason why the tractor-trailer left the road remains unclear. Accidents of this type are not only of local concern, but also shed light on larger trends in German road traffic. According to current statistics, there were around 2.5 million road traffic accidents in Germany in 2024, which represents a decrease compared to the previous year. At the same time, however, there is an increase in accidents causing property damage, while the number of accidents causing personal injury remains at a stable level that has been observed since 1955.
Road safety is important to the responsible authorities. A long-term goal sought by EU transport ministers is “Vision Zero” – no traffic deaths by 2050. In 2024, the number of traffic deaths in Germany was 2,770, which is significantly lower in historical comparison, but is still cause for concern. Above all, human factors such as inattention and recklessness continue to be common causes of traffic accidents. Even though the accident in Lamstedt resulted in no injuries, the statistics on the motorways and federal highways are worrying, especially in view of the increasing number of accidents with new means of transport such as e-bikes and e-scooters.
The incident highlights the importance of remaining vigilant and aware of the dangers on the road. It remains to be hoped that such accidents can be further reduced in the future through preventative measures.
