CSD events in danger: Right-wing attacks are increasing dramatically!
Nowadays, the safety of the LGBTQ community in Germany is increasingly being put to the test. More and more right-wing extremist activists are threatening and disrupting parades and rallies dedicated to diversity and tolerance. In particular, the Christopher Street Day (CSD) events, which are scheduled to take place nationwide in the coming months, are the focus of this growing willingness to use violence. Last year, on June 15, 2024, there was an attack on the queer city festival “For a colorful Bad Freienwalde” in Brandenburg. A shock for the participants: a group of about twelve masked people attacked and the incident ended with three people injured, while the police were not present. Such events cast a shadow over the upcoming celebrations.
The rise in anti-queer attacks is alarming. Counseling centers reported a 40% increase in attacks compared to the previous year. In 2024 there were a total of 354 attacks, compared to 245 a year earlier. The Amadeu Antonio Foundation registered 55 attacks specifically at CSD events, which were often accompanied by counter-demonstrations. What is also worrying is the increase in threats against CSD organizers, which are creating a clear climate of fear. In West Germany, people were forced to cancel several CSDs or convert them into simpler rallies.
Politics and activism
In view of these developments, the Federal Ministry of the Interior has expressed its concern and condemned the increasing focus of violent right-wing extremists on the queer scene. Between June and September 2024, around 20 rallies, organized or dominated by right-wing extremists, took place against CSD events. A notable mobilization was registered, for example, in Bautzen, Leipzig, Magdeburg and Zwickau, where hundreds of participants gathered. Such disruptive actions are part of a broad strategy organized by right-wing extremist groups such as “The Third Way” and “Free Saxony”.
But the LGBTQ community is not giving up. Initiatives such as “Pride Soli Ride” and “We are the colorful hinterland!” are actively committed to the protection and visibility of their events. Eleven CSD parades are planned for the summer of 2024 in Saxony-Anhalt, although reports of threats are making preparations more difficult. There are also 23 CSDs on the program in Brandenburg, with other popular right-wing counter-protests. 15 events are planned in Thuringia, many of them for the first time ever, and the CSD in Berlin is facing financial difficulties as sponsors withdraw due to global developments.
The context of the attacks
The right-wing extremist scene sees the LGBTQ+ movement as an enemy that is used to spread racist and nationalist ideologies. The Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution is observing an increasing number of anti-queer statements and violent attacks. Particularly during Pride Month, right-wing extremists use this time to express their views to the public. In recent years there has been a continuous increase in verbal attacks on the queer scene. The idea of “gender propaganda” is propagated to gain civic support and stoke fears.
This complex situation requires urgent policy responses because the vulnerability of queer people is a challenge that cannot be ignored. The Green Bundestag member Misbah Khan emphasized the need to take measures against radicalization. A democracy promotion law that has been on hold for a year and a half is intended to support clubs and organizations in order to strengthen democracy and prevent extremism. But until that happens, the pressure on the LGBTQ community remains high.
The threat situation is particularly pronounced in East Germany, where the visibility and security of the LGBTQ community is severely endangered by the activities of right-wing extremist groups. Maintaining celebrations and community cohesion are more important now than ever.
