Speed trap on the streets: speed camera marathon uncovers speed offenders!

Last week the police once again sent a strong message against speeders. As part of the European Roadpol speed control week, intensive speed monitoring took place in several federal states, including Lower Saxony and North Rhine-Westphalia. From August 4th to 10th, 2025, several thousand vehicles were checked. So reported NDR that 2,366 vehicles were checked in Göttingen alone on Wednesday. 782 drivers had to reckon with speeding, although most of them were at a lower speed limit.

A particularly striking example was a 22-year-old driver from the Holzminden district who was caught driving at 88 km/h in a 50 km/h zone. Such speeding is dangerous and is directly linked to many traffic accidents, because, according to the Federal Statistical Office, excessive speeds are the main cause of fatal accidents in Germany. A shock that seriously endangers road safety!

Controls with clear rules

The Osnabrück police were also busy and found 303 speeding violations. Of these, 170 resulted in fines, with five drivers even having to expect a driving ban. One of the front runners was a vehicle on the A33 in Georgsmarienhütte that was traveling at 148 km/h in a 100 zone.

Last week the checks were carried out not only on federal highways, but also in urban areas and near schools and retirement homes. Such places are particularly at risk because they are often populated by pedestrians and cyclists. The federal states such as Lower Saxony, Schleswig-Holstein and Hamburg have currently actively participated in this measure in order to increase road safety daily news reported.

Fines and penalties

The fines were adjusted at the beginning of the year and have increased significantly. In urban areas, speeding by up to 10 km/h now costs 30 euros, while driving more than 70 km/h too fast is punished with a whopping 800 euros and a driving ban. A significant incentive to respect the speed limits! Drivers who use apps that warn of speed cameras also face a fine of 75 euros.

Speeding violations and fines Inner town Out of town
Up to 10 km/h 30 euros 20 euros
21-25 km/h 115 euros + 1 point N/A
More than 70 km/h 800 euros + driving ban 700 euros + driving ban

There are calls for more staff and more frequent checks, particularly from the police union. There are voices that question the measure itself, with Sylvia Ruge from the German Lawyers' Association expressing skepticism about the lasting impact of the lightning campaigns and seeing them as more of a source of financial income for the municipalities.

But it remains completely undisputed: speed controls are necessary. Various techniques are used to detect violations, including radar systems and laser measuring devices. These controls are crucial to increasing safety on our roads, as noted in a post by Catalog of fines.

The checks will not end this week; the police will continue to be vigilant in the future. The following applies to all drivers: turn around and consciously keep the accelerator pedal under control!
