Magdeburg starts revolutionary AI robotics project for medicine!

On October 28, 2025, an important kick-off symposium for the innovation partnership between the Magdeburg University Medical Center (UMMD) and BEC Medical GmbH was held in Magdeburg. Under the motto “Rethinking medicine: AI and robotics working together,” the partnership is dedicated to the development of a modular, AI-supported medical robot platform that is intended to revolutionize surgical and interventional procedures. This initiative is supported by funds from the Corona special fund of the state of Saxony-Anhalt and aims to enable more precise and gentler operations and to relieve the burden on medical staff. As med.ovgu.de reports, The research project is being implemented at the STIMULATE research campus of the Otto von Guericke University, where innovative approaches to artificial intelligence and robotics in medicine are being researched.

The planned integration of AI and intraoperative imaging into the new robot platform opens up the possibility of semi-autonomous interventions. CE certification as a medical device is also being considered, which shows that the safety and reliability of the technology are a priority. This not only strengthens Saxony-Anhalt as a medical technology location, but also promotes the training of highly qualified specialists in the region.

Change in healthcare

The use of artificial intelligence and robotics has the potential to profoundly change healthcare. Numerous technologies such as electronic patient records and AI-supported evaluations are already being used. According to Fraunhofer IKS, intelligent systems not only support medical diagnostics, but also individual therapy and follow-up care for patients at home.

The digital networking of patient data and the use of robot assistants in operating rooms are further approaches that make work in medicine easier and at the same time improve patient care. AI-supported analysis can help evaluate large amounts of data, which is particularly important in oncology and cancer research.

The future of medicine

The importance of AI in healthcare is constantly growing. It is estimated that global sales of AI in healthcare could reach over $140 billion by 2029. (An interesting development; experts are already talking about a new era in medical technology.) In the third quarter of 2024, 89 new AI startups were founded in the medical sector in Germany. One of these promising companies is Ada Health, which has established itself as a leading German AI startup in the healthcare sector.

While the opportunities presented by AI are obvious, challenges also need to be addressed. Dealing with data protection, social and legal issues continues to be discussed. Future developments will also depend on well-established data standards to realize the integration and full potential of AI in medicine.

All in all, the latest developments in Saxony-Anhalt and beyond show that the combination of science and economic innovation shines not only regionally but also internationally. Prime Minister Dr. Reiner Haseloff emphasized how important the project is for the future viability of the country. This is just the beginning of a journey that will bring many new possibilities in medical technology.
