Refurbishment of the Deichkronenweg: Flood protection secured for Aken!

Refurbishment of the Deichkronenweg: Flood protection secured for Aken!

Derenburg, Deutschland - In the Salzlandkreis there will soon be an extensive renovation on the left Elbe between Aken and Breitenhagen. The state company for flood protection and water management Saxony-Anhalt (LHW) has commissioned the construction activities on the Kronenweg, which extends over a section of 3.5 to 8.5 kilometers. The reason for these measures are cracks in the asphalt layer on the water side, which urgently need to be remedied in order to improve flood protection in the region. According to aken.de the asphalt layer and the path to the upper edge of the frost protection layer is removed, and the dike crown is completely rebuilt.

The construction work that is carried out in several sections does not have to be done without restrictions: the dyke section is blocked for cycling and foot traffic during the renovation, and cyclists are asked to avoid the Easternelbian part of the Elberadweg via Steutz, Steckby and Tochheim. The diversion is signposted on site. The total costs for this renovation amount to around 1.8 million euros gross and are financed by state funds. The completion of the work is planned for the end of November 2025.

Need for flood protection measures

In recent years,

Saxony-Anhalt have increasingly struggled with heavy rain events that often lead to considerable damage. According to the [LHW Saxony-Anhalt] (https://lhw.Sachsen-Anhalt.de/planen-baugen/baumfeitungen), a total of 195 measures to improve flood protection were played in this context. This initiative is part of a broader state strategy that is based on EU Directive 2007/60/EC. This guideline obliges the member states to regulate flood risk management in order to be able to better counter the dangers of heavy rain and other extreme weather events.

The increasingly more common heavy rain events are related to climate change, which ensures a higher humidity. This means that the precipitation can increase extremely in a very short time. Because not only roads and land are at risk, the risk of fall floods and backlogs of narrow places such as bridges also grows. Understandably, this has also led to increased awareness among municipalities and citizens. Overall, the importance of suitable precautionary measures is often emphasized.

Enlightenment and responsibility

Those responsible in the Ministry of Environment of Saxony-Anhalt have already taken measures to clarify these dangers. There are flyers that inform citizens about the risks of heavy rain and give tips on how to best protect yourself. Furthermore, municipalities should through guidelines such as "actively against heavy rain!" are supported to develop suitable risk management strategies. Important recommendations for action come from organizations such as the DWA or BWK. Funding programs from EU, the federal and state governments are also available to support flood protection measures financially.

In view of these developments, it is clear: flood protection not only has a high priority in Saxony-Anhalt, but is also a central concern to protect the population from the increasing storms and the associated dangers. For example, the first flood protection measures were already taken after the 2017 flood protection measures to improve the protection of the settlements.

All of these efforts show: Together and preventive, a lot can be achieved to make life in our region more secure.
