New cycle path connects Bismark and Kalbe: pure experience over 14 km!
There has recently been a new cycle path that connects the two towns of Bismark and Kalbe/Milde. The route stretches over a length of around 14 kilometers, which not only benefits cyclists but also pedestrians. The construction period took around 1.5 years and the total cost of the project was around 6.5 million euros. What is special about this project is that it was realized through the cooperation of the two municipalities, which have come together to improve the mobility infrastructure. The cycle path was built on a former railway line that was in operation for over 100 years. The last railcar rolled over the tracks in 2001, which were then abandoned and reclaimed by nature, so that weeds and bushes now grow there.
Before construction of the cycle path could begin, it was necessary to uncover the old route. Around 4,500 cubic meters of concrete were used. As part of the renovation, five bridges on the route were completely replaced. Particularly worth mentioning is the intelligent lighting system, which was equipped with motion detectors in the core areas of the cycle path. This ensures that cyclists and pedestrians are safe even at dusk. In addition, a staircase with an incline was built in Kalbe/Milde for allotment gardeners, which makes access to the new cycle route easier.
Cycle path is already in use
Although the cycle path has not officially opened yet, it is already enjoying great popularity. Many residents use the new connection between the two primary centers and appreciate the easy access to the train stop in Hohenwulsch. Cyclists can also rely on a good range of catering options in the restaurants, ice cream parlors and kiosks in Bismark and Kalbe/Milde.
Bicycle use is widespread in rural areas and shorter journeys are often covered by bicycle. A key feature of the new cycle path is improved lighting, which is often lacking in many rural areas. As badenova.de reports, the lack of lighting on cycle and pedestrian paths has often increased the risk for users in the past, especially in the early morning and late evening hours.
Promoting climate-friendly mobility
Promoting cycling infrastructure is one of the key measures for climate-friendly mobility. The Klimaschutz.de points out that, for example, new cycle paths can even receive funding for lighting if it is installed together with the construction of the path. These are important steps towards environmentally friendly mobility, which should not only attract more cyclists in the future, but also increase road safety. Such projects also contribute to reducing greenhouse gases, which has a positive impact on the environment.
With this new cycle connection between Bismark and Kalbe/Milde, another step has been taken in the right direction. The communities show that shared commitment pays off and new paths can emerge - both literally and figuratively.
