Protest against Witschas: Final Solution” causes excitement in Bautzen!

On October 4, 2025, a stirring protest against CDU district administrator Udo Witschas is in full swing in Bautzen. At around 6:30 a.m., unknown activists hoisted a large banner with the intrusive message: "'Final solution' for Witschas? Resign!" The banner was clearly visible from the Peace Bridge for a few minutes, drawing attention to Witschas' controversial statements during a district council meeting on September 29th, where he did not seek a "final solution" for Ukrainian refugees, but still addressed the issue in an extremely problematic manner. The protest shows that citizens in Bautzen do not want to be satisfied with the words of their political representatives, who are perceived by the public as extremist.

Udo Witschas, who came under criticism not only because of his questionable statements, also has close connections to right-wing extremist forces. He regularly meets with the convicted criminal Karsten Hilse, a leading member of the AfD, which causes a stir in Bautzen. He even has a picture of that meeting on display in his office, underscoring the worrying confluence of political views and administrative responsibilities. Despite these scandalous connections, the CDU remains conspicuously silent about Witschas' behavior, while the German Association of Journalists in Saxony sharply criticizes his treatment of the press and the cancellation of the “Partnerships for Democracy” funding program, which resulted in a loss of 200,000 euros.

Wave of protests against right-wing extremism

The demonstration in Cologne was peaceful and showed that citizens want to send a clear message - a message for diversity and against exclusion. Thousands also mobilized in other cities such as Aschaffenburg, Berlin and Halle to send a strong message.

A problem that affects more than just Bautzen

Witschas' questionable statements and the unacceptable manners in dealing with journalists raise questions about the state of freedom of expression in Saxony. The Bautzen district office confronted the critical reporters with the accusation of “informing,” which points to a problematic relationship with the press. Many people ask themselves how it is possible in a democracy for positions to be so intertwined with political views without any public scrutiny or discussion.

The protest in Bautzen and the nationwide demonstrations show that citizens are not prepared to accept such conditions. It is in the air that the focus must be on those responsible in order to set the course for a democratic and open society.
