Lyme disease alarm in Saxony: cases increase by 50 percent during the holidays!
In the last few weeks, the health authorities in Saxony have sounded the alarm: the number of Lyme disease cases has risen sharply. A total of 663 illnesses were registered during the 2025 summer holidays, an increase of almost 50 percent compared to the previous year, when 450 cases were reported, reports MDR. This worrying development is attributed to the mild winter, which favored a tick-rich year, explains Monika Welfens, the state manager of Barmer Sachsen.
What is particularly striking is that over 55 percent of Lyme disease cases occurred during the summer holidays. In the entire year of 2025, 1,209 cases have been registered by the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), while last year at the same time there were significantly fewer affected people at 906 cases. The numbers of tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) are also not insignificant, although declines have already been observed with 27 cases this year and 37 last year.
A look at the numbers
The recently published statistics clearly show the spread of Lyme disease in Saxony:
- 2025: 663 Fälle während der Sommerferien
- 2024: 450 Fälle im selben Zeitraum
- 2025: 1.209 Gesamterkrankungen (bis Ende der letzten Woche)
- 2024: 906 Gesamterkrankungen im gleichen Zeitraum
- FSME 2025: 27 Fälle
- FSME 2024: 37 Fälle
In addition, the authorities report 68 new cases of Lyme disease in a single week, which is spread across the whole of Saxony - the regions of Dresden and the Saxon Switzerland-Eastern Ore Mountains have particularly stood out. Since the beginning of the year, 535 infections have been recorded, an increase compared to 456 cases at the same time last year Day24 determines.
What happens in the body?
Lyme disease, also known as Lyme disease, can have serious consequences. In addition to typical symptoms such as ring-shaped reddening of the skin, fatigue and fever, it can also lead to inflammation of the joints, heart muscle and nerves. Symptoms of an infection with Lyme disease usually only follow one to six weeks after a tick bite, which makes early detection so important. Treatment is usually with antibiotics, while there is a vaccination against TBE.
Ticks, which are the main vectors of the disease, feel particularly comfortable in forests, tall grass and damp foliage. It becomes particularly dangerous when temperatures rise to over 7 degrees Celsius, because then the little pests are active. The RKI warns of the health risks and points out the importance of public health protection measures, especially with regard to climate changes, which can influence the occurrence and spread of such diseases, as stated on the website Robert Koch Institute can be read.
Given these alarming statistics, it is advisable to exercise caution when spending time outdoors. Wearing long clothing and using tick repellent can help minimize the risk of infection. Stay healthy and enlightened!
