Chemnitz loses youth art school: A fatal signal for culture!

The Chemnitz city administration made the regrettable decision today to close the youth art school. This measure follows a continued insufficient demand for the courses on offer. How MDR reports, the city was forced to take this step due to the high organizational and financial effort. The precautionary measures to establish the facility sustainably could not be implemented as desired.

What does this mean for Chemnitz? The closure means that after the closure, Chemnitz will be the only major city in Saxony without a youth art school. This was also seen by Valentina Marcenaro, chairwoman of the Saxony State Association of Youth Art Schools, as a fatal signal for the cultural capital of Chemnitz. It is difficult to understand how a city that adorns itself with the title of European Capital of Culture 2025 can do without such an institution. Loud Child and cone The decision is viewed by the Saxony State Working Group for Youth Art Schools as incomprehensible, especially in the context of cultural education for children and young people.

The youth art school, which only opened in March 2024 under the roof of the Chemnitz Adult Education Center, offered young people between the ages of 14 and 18 a wide range of opportunities for creative development. The course offerings included areas such as film, photography, fashion design and creative writing. This should not only open the door to artistic careers for students, but also promote their personal development.

Although the adult education center will continue to offer creative offerings, the loss of the youth art school remains a bitter setback for the cultural landscape of Chemnitz. They were not only places for artistic learning, but also for personal development and social interaction. This is particularly important at a time when society places so much emphasis on diversity, democracy and sustainability. Information on this can also be found in the new publication of the Federal Association of Youth Art Schools and Cultural Education Institutions ( Youth art schools in Saxony ), which highlights the importance of such facilities.

It is to be hoped that alternative ways will be found in the future to give young people in Saxony continued access to creative educational opportunities. The development of children and young people in a creative environment is important not only for themselves, but for society as a whole.
