Chemnitz maker scene conquers Tokyo: Creativity at the Germany Festival!
What's going on in Tokyo? Quite a lot! The Germany Festival took place in Hibiya Park on November 2nd, 2025, and the Saxon maker scene is there for the first time with creative participation offers. How View reports, the event was invited by the German Embassy Tokyo and organized in collaboration with the EU-Japan Fest. Saxony once again showed that it is a creative place.
Hundreds of visitors flocked to the workshops offered by two Saxon teams – the Holzkombinat Chemnitz and the Makerspace Schneeberg. At the Holzkombinat, people were able to design refrigerator magnets out of wood and print unique Cheminter motifs. Not only was this a great opportunity to be creative, but also to take home something completely unique. The colleagues from Schneeberg thrilled people with upcycling workshops in which participants were able to make Christmas angels from waste material. Not only was material from Saxony used, but we also worked with local partners.
A creative coming together
Sachio Howoldt from the German Embassy was enthusiastic about the wide range of opportunities to participate. Katrin Hoffmann, managing director of the Industrieverein Sachsen 1828 e.V., emphasized the importance of the cultural exchange between Saxony and Japan, which is promoted by such events. After all, makers are something very special: they are often people who actively implement ideas, design and make things themselves. And that is exactly what is not only well received in Chemnitz, but also creates connections across borders.
Meanwhile, Japanese makers showcased their expertise in traditional earth and straw art and demonstrated programmable robotic vehicles. Such intercultural encounters are a central point of the European Capital of Culture project Chemnitz 2025, with the aim of connecting regional and international culture. And the EU-Japan Festival is an important partner in supporting and implementing projects like this Chemnitz2025 can be read.

In summary, it can be said that the creative participatory culture, which is promoted through events such as the Germany Festival in Tokyo, sustainably strengthens not only Saxony, but also the entire European Capital of Culture Chemnitz 2025. It will be exciting to see how these connections continue in the future and how exciting projects continue to be connected!
