Burglary in Chemnitz: jewelry and watch worth 2,000 euros stolen!
Last weekend a break-in occurred in Chemnitz-Reichenbrand, which put both residents and the police on alert. Unknown perpetrators broke into an apartment in an apartment building on Pelzmühlenstrasse through a patio door and searched the interior. They stole a watch and several pieces of jewelry, which resulted in total damage of around 2,000 euros. The criminal police are now examining possible connections with other break-ins that also took place this weekend, reports Blick.
Beyond the background, the increase in home break-ins in Germany has been a big issue since the Corona pandemic. According to Statista, there were around 119,000 burglaries in apartments in 2023, including around 77,800 classified as residential burglaries. The clearance rate is only 14.9%, which makes citizens sit up and take notice and affects their sense of security.
Robbery at a jeweler in Chemnitz
The people in Chemnitz have just had to deal with another incident: On Tuesday there was a robbery at a jeweler that took place at 3:20 p.m. Several masked men stormed the store while an accomplice waited outside. The 44-year-old owner was brutally attacked and tied up while the perpetrators stole jewelry and cash from display cases and the safe. The owner was taken to a clinic as a precaution and was fortunately able to free himself. The perpetrators fled in a gray van with Polish license plates, as Bild reports.
The police cordoned off the crime scene and carried out extensive forensic investigation. Although there were numerous witnesses and the search continued into the evening, the search for the perpetrators was initially unsuccessful. The amount of the loot is still unknown, which puts additional strain on the affected businesses in the city center.
Burglary crime in Germany
The alarm bells are ringing not only in Chemnitz, but in many cities in Germany. The figures show that the risk of burglary is highest in urban areas, particularly in Bremen, Berlin and Hamburg. These cities record the most cases per 100,000 residents, while Bavaria has the lowest rates. With a consistent clearance rate of only 14.9%, the majority of perpetrators remain at large, which is increasingly alarming citizens and raising the question of how people can live more safely in the future.
After several criminal incidents occurred in Chemnitz within a short period of time, it remains to be hoped that the security authorities can quickly get the situation under control and the perpetrators will be caught soon. This way the city would have a little more peace and security again.
