Hartmannbrunnen returns: Chemnitz celebrates new signs of life!

Something exciting is happening in Chemnitz: The Hartmann Fountain, which has been hidden for a long time, will soon bubble again! The fountain, which stood in front of the Chemnitz Clinic - formerly known as the Karl-Marx-Stadt District Hospital - from 1982 to 2018, was dismantled as part of the clinic's new construction work and has been stored unused on the clinic premises ever since. But that should now change! According to MDR, the planned reconstruction has an estimated cost of 200,000 euros and is being supported by an initiative by the entrepreneur Jörg Meinel and committed citizens of Chemnitz.

What exactly is behind the project? The Hartmann Fountain, designed by Horst Hartmann in the late 1970s, will be re-erected in the Germania Industrial Park in Altchemnitz, where it was originally produced. With the “Hartmann’s coming home” project, the people of Chemnitz want to ensure that the historical element finds a new, publicly accessible place in the city, as Tag24 reports. Martin Jonas, managing director of the clinic, expressed his enthusiasm about the initiative and the importance of the fountain as part of public space.

Renovation and restoration

Before the fountain shines again in its full glory, extensive renovation and restoration work is necessary. These include not only the restoration of the well parts, but also underground work such as pumps, civil engineering, water treatment and power supply. In the near future, the fountain parts will be refinished by specialist stainless steel processing companies, which should finally end the long period of sadness.

The project also receives impressive support from various quarters: the Chemnitz Clinic is contributing 5,000 euros to the restoration. It's nice to see how the collective commitment of citizens and institutions helps to refresh the cityscape of Chemnitz and enrich it with a historical attraction.

The context: Chemnitz as Cultural Capital 2025

The project is not only a local historical endeavor, but also part of a larger vision. Chemnitz will be the European Capital of Culture in 2025, which will bring with it a variety of urban development projects. The urban development project currently includes around 30 intervention areas, including the Hartmann fountain and the new district park on the renatured Pleißenbach. The total investment volume for these projects is expected to be around 60 million euros. The aim is to sustainably strengthen the city community and create creative freedom, as the city of Chemnitz itself explains on its website.

So when will the fountain bubble? Completion of the Hartmann Fountain is planned for 2025, exactly the year in which Chemnitz celebrates its cultural reboot. A good time to let the city and its history shine in a new light!
