New splendor for the Chemnitz Theater: Reiners and Marquardt take off!

On August 11, 2025, the Chemnitz Theater reopened its doors after the summer break and welcomed two important new additions: Benjamin Reiners will be the new general music director and chief conductor of the Robert Schumann Philharmonic, while Christine Marquardt will take the helm as opera director. This fresh duo promises an exciting 2025/2026 season, which started the new year on August 8th with lots of music. Kulturfreak reports on the latest developments this season, which offers many cultural highlights.

As an experienced conductor, Reiners brings with him a large repertoire. He has already worked at outstanding venues such as the Deutsche Oper Berlin and the Nuremberg State Theater and most recently celebrated success with a ballet evening in Chemnitz that presented works by Ravel and Stravinsky. From now on, his creative work in Chemnitz will have a significant impact on the musical landscape. At Theater Chemnitz we find out more about his impressive career and his previous engagements.

Cultural highlights of the season

The first days of this season are all about music. The Robert Schumann Philharmonic will cause a sensation next weekend, August 15th and 16th, with “Take The Brass Train II” at the Schauplatz Eisenbahn museum. The Rudolf Kempe Orchestra Academy will also be celebrating a concert to mark its 20th anniversary on August 17th. On August 22nd and 25th, visitors can look forward to an opening concert of the music theater, where samples from new productions such as “The Flying Dutchman” and “Don Giovanni” will be presented.

Readers who are looking for special theater experiences can also look forward to the puppet theater, which premieres on August 23rd with “About Us the Big Dipper” by Julia Brettschneider. Inspired by the stories of the garage owners, this piece is sure to be a highlight of the new season. And for everyone who likes it open-air, a picnic concert in the Chemnitz Industrial Museum on August 24th will mark the end of the opening weeks.

A man with visions

Benjamin Reiners has not only led numerous orchestras in his career, but has also worked with outstanding artists. With his wide stylistic range and the courage to come up with new ideas, he will certainly bring a breath of fresh air into Chemnitz's musical life. In the last season in Kiel he directed impressive new productions such as “Buddenbrooks” and was able to demonstrate his skills in various genres.

With a creative connection to artists such as the famous violinist Frank Peter Zimmermann and the soprano Anja Harteros, he has great ambitions for the Chemnitz Philharmonic. The announcement of Reiners as the new captain on board the Robert Schumann Philharmonic will be followed closely at the n-ag, where he thrilled the citizens with his brilliant concert premiere.

The coming months at the Chemnitz Theater promise not only musical enjoyment, but also exciting cultural experiences that will appeal to both old and new fans of the theater. Art and culture at the highest level – that is the motto that is at the top this season!
