Traffic safety and wood harvesting in the Chemnitz municipal forest started!

Significant changes to the municipal forest are imminent in the heart of Chemnitz. Extensive work on traffic safety and timber harvesting, initiated by the city of Chemnitz's parks department, is starting immediately. Carefully selected tree care companies take on the necessary measures. The problem should not be underestimated: many of the old beech and ash trees in the forests have a questionable crown condition and a high proportion of dead wood. The areas around the waterworks park, the Glösaer and Crimmitschau forest as well as the fish farm and the edge of the forest at the Riedteich are particularly affected.

Traffic safety measures have been implemented on the edges of the forest since October. The increase in timber harvest, which begins in November, will not only improve the condition of the forest, but also ensure safety for all visitors. The beautiful tree species landscape, which is also vulnerable to storms, has been through a lot in the past, and the *bark beetle infestation* is showing a decline thanks to good weather. Nevertheless, the continuous maintenance and thinning of hardwood stands remains a central concern.

The bark beetle: a constant challenge

The challenges posed by the pest issue are not new. FOVGIS Bavaria explains that the number of bark beetles caught can only be made visible the following day. The importance of a timely response to high infestation potential is emphasized. Protective measures such as removing storm wood are essential to counteract further spread.

Experienced forestry experts such as Kohnle and Hans-Ulrich Kison recommend using well-thought-out breeding space management as a prophylactic measure to slow down the population build-up. “Clean forest management” can help to deprive beetles of breeding space and thus reduce the reproduction rate. These efforts are often lengthy but show commendable success in reducing infestation rates. Nevertheless, combating them remains an ongoing task that requires constant observation and active action.

Practical information for forest visitors

Forest visitors should be aware that the affected forest areas and paths are closed during timber harvesting and traffic safety measures. There is a danger to life if these barriers are ignored. It is strongly advisable not to step on or climb on wooden piles.

Citizens have the opportunity to purchase firewood licenses from district forester Jörg Weisbrich until February 2026. One meter of firewood costs 25 euros, but a minimum order of three meters is required. In order to process wood yourself in the forest, you need a chainsaw license and protective clothing. If you are interested in firewood that is two meters long and ready for collection, you should register for at least five meters of space. For larger orders of ten meters or more, home delivery is even offered.

For further information about the upcoming forest work, the Parks Department is the right place to go. You are welcome to contact us via email to clarify any questions you may have.

In conclusion, it remains to be said that a well-planned timber harvest not only serves road safety, but also the health of the forest, so that it remains accessible to everyone in the future and represents a green oasis in the city.
