Dramatic incident at the main train station: man knocks down policewoman!

On Monday morning, July 8, 2025, a frightening incident occurred at Dresden Central Station that shines a spotlight on the importance of security and how to deal with violence against emergency services. A 22-year-old man caused a stir around 8:50 a.m. when he insulted travelers in the north-south passage. An attentive passerby immediately informed the federal police about the aggressive situation.

The police officers, who were already familiar with the man, arrived a short time later. When contacted, the suspect presented himself as nervous and threatening. Particularly alarming was his threat to carry a knife, which he eventually handed over to the officers. However, according to t-online.de, he refused to put down a glass bottle and continued to gesture threateningly with it.

A violent attack

In a sudden moment of violence, the perpetrator hit a federal police officer in the face with the glass bottle. Fortunately, the injured officer was able to continue her duties afterwards. The emergency services reacted immediately and overpowered the attacker, who was then arrested. The Federal Police Inspectorate in Dresden is now investigating several serious crimes, including dangerous bodily harm, insults, resistance to law enforcement officers and a violation of the weapons law.

Resistance to law enforcement officers, as in the present case, is a serious offense in Germany. Section 113 of the Criminal Code (StGB) deals with exactly such acts. Officials, especially police officers, enjoy protection when they have to enforce sovereign measures. A perpetrator commits a criminal offense if he uses force to resist the execution of an official act. It is not just the physical impact that is crucial, but also the threat of violence. In many cases, this leads to fines or prison sentences of up to three years, and in particularly serious cases even from six months to five years if a weapon is carried or the officer's life is endangered, such as anwalt.de explains.

The state's monopoly on violence

The monopoly of force in Germany lies with the state, which employs law enforcement officers to enforce sovereign measures. Resistance to these officials can be both active and passive. Any action that makes it more difficult to carry out their duties is potentially punishable. The court rulings also take into account whether the measures taken by the
officials were lawful. A particularly serious case occurs when the use of force is grossly disproportionate or a weapon is used, according to information from ra-kotz.de.

As is well known, these incidents are not the exception, but rather occur frequently in the everyday lives of police officers. The laws are clear and the consequences for any resistance to law enforcement officers can be significant. It remains to be hoped that such incidents will decrease in the future and that the safety of the emergency services will be guaranteed.
