Knife attack in Dresden tram: Tunisians injured, racism suspected!
A disturbing incident occurred on Tuesday on a Dresden tram, where a 35-year-old Tunisian man was involved in a knife attack. This attack took place after an argument between the Tunisian and two German men who are now suspected perpetrators. The Tunisian was injured in the neck and had to be taken to hospital immediately MDR reported.
The witnesses alerted the police and the suspects, a 26-year-old and a 35-year-old, were arrested a short time later. It turns out that both men were heavily intoxicated: the 26-year-old had a blood alcohol level of 2.6, while the 35-year-old was caught with a blood alcohol level of 3.2. The police have secured the suspected murder weapon and the two men are now in police custody.
Politically motivated crimes
What is particularly alarming is the fact that the two people arrested have already attracted attention for politically motivated crimes in the past and are assigned to the right-wing spectrum. The Dresden police state security agency has taken over the investigation to clarify whether there was a racist motive behind the attack. This incident is one of a series of attacks in Saxony that have recently fueled the public debate about the growing willingness to use violence among right-wing extremist groups FAZ determines.
The security situation in Saxony is tense, which is also reflected in the figures for right-wing extremist crimes. According to the Office for the Protection of the Constitution, the violent right-wing extremist potential in Germany is around 15,300 people. This number has increased compared to previous years and is accompanied by an increase in right-wing extremist violence, which rose to 1,281 cases in 2024, an increase of 11.6%. What is particularly worrying is the 4.8% increase in xenophobic assault crimes to 916 cases in the same year, emphasizes the Protection of the Constitution.
In this context, incidents like the attack on the Tunisian on the Dresden tram take on a new dimension. They remind us that the problem of right-wing extremism and its violent manifestations in Saxony and beyond must be urgently addressed. As investigations continue, it is hoped that lessons will be learned from such incidents and that society will stand together to combat racism and the harm caused.
