Premiere of Ronja Robber's Daughter: A family adventure in Dresden!
Today, on November 8th, 2025, a real highlight for the whole family will be performed at the Dresden State Theater: “Ronja the Robber's Daughter” is celebrating its premiere. The story, written by Swedish author Astrid Lindgren and first published in 1981, has established itself as a timeless classic. The German translation followed just a year later, in 1982. The film adaptation in 1984 in particular contributed to the story gaining a high status worldwide.
The plot revolves around the courageous girl Ronja and her family of robbers, who live in a fairytale-like environment, the so-called Mattisburg, which is described as a plush green bouncy castle. Surrounded by deep forests and the dreaded pit of hell, Ronja must not only face the dangers of nature, but also the decisions that affect her identity and her relationship with her father Mattis. In this production, which director Jan Gehler developed with his team, the focus is clearly on the main character and her strong personality.
Kaleidoscope of relationships
Together with Ronja, there are two feuding robber families, which inevitably form a central theme of conflict. However, the children of these enmities find each other secretly, which adds additional facets to the story. Henriette Hölzel, who plays Ronja, describes her role as modern and emphasizes the relevance of these stories to current conflicts. The sailor and pirate traditions offer a huge contrast to the usually clear separation of good and evil.
Jan Maihorn provides the musical background, while Christian Schönfelder edited the piece. The lighting design comes from Konrad Dietze. The cast also includes Oliver Simon, Friederike Ott and Philipp Lux, who play a key role in making the production lively and appealing.
Dates and other performances
The premiere takes place today at 5 p.m. and further performances are already planned for November 21st, 22nd and 30th, 2025. This new production claims to be perceived as the perfect family piece without falling into the trap of an exaggerated modernist interpretation.
“Ronja the Robber's Daughter” offers a wonderful opportunity for parents and children to immerse themselves in Astrid Lindgren's adventurous world, which is not only the setting for fantastic creatures such as gray gnomes and dark trolls, but also holds important life lessons.
Overall, it remains to be seen how the audience reacts to this timeless production. But one thing is for sure: this story is about much more than just adventure - it deals with the important themes of friendship, identity and the search for one's place in the world. Loud MDR “Ronja Robber’s Daughter” is definitely a piece that you shouldn’t miss.
