Traffic chaos on marathon Sunday: Dresden is at a standstill!
A very special marathon day is coming! On Sunday, October 26, 2025, running enthusiasts will gather in Dresden where the 25th Dresden Marathon will be celebrated. Many participants can look forward to an exciting race while the city prepares for possible traffic disruptions.
As mdr.de reports, drivers should plan their journeys as best as possible on this day. From 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. there will probably be traffic jams on the streets of Dresden as the running route is closed. The Dresdner Verkehrs-betriebe (DVB) has already drawn up replacement timetables for more than a dozen tram and bus lines. Current information can be found on the DVB website, or you can simply contact the service telephone on 0351-8 57 10 11.
Strong participants and personal best times
This year the field of participants is diverse. 22-year-old Blanka Dörfel from Berlin will take part in the half marathon and is aiming for her personal best time of 1:09:45 hours. Top German runners like Johannes Motschmann are also taking part. In addition, the Dutch triathlete and duathlon world champion Yvonne van Vlerken will demonstrate her skills in the marathon; her best time in the Roth long-distance competition is under 9 hours.
The marathon has become more important in recent years. Last year there were an impressive 9,500 registrations - a real record for the Dresden Marathon. Apparently running is trendy, because in Germany there were over 121 marathon events and more than 121,000 finishers in total in 2024, as shown on statista.com.
The atmosphere is celebrated here
Of course, the 25th anniversary of the Dresden Marathon will be properly celebrated. On Friday evening, from 6 p.m., there will be a big party night in the marquee behind the Heinz Steyer Stadium. Please note that entry is only possible with a ticket and there will be no noodle party this year.
For anyone interested in endurance sports, health, fitness and nutrition, the marathon fair in the BallsportARENA next to the stadium is an absolute must. It remains open from Friday to Sunday and offers a comprehensive program.
The route itself has endured some challenges in the past. It was changed in 2024 due to the collapse of the Carola Bridge. Last year's winners were the two Kenyans: Julis Kiprono Tarus won the men's race in 2:14:44 hours and Caroline Jeruto Chesir won the women's race with 2:35:08 hours. In addition, the men's course record, set by Ezekiel Koech with 2:10:00 hours since 2019, and the women's course record, set by Teclah Chebet with 2:30:30 hours since 2022, are keeping spectators and participants in suspense.
The Dresden Marathon is without a doubt a highlight in the regional event calendar and attracts both the best runners and running enthusiasts. This close connection between sport and community makes the event a unique experience for everyone involved.
